BLM: Progress takes a step back on containing the Bison Fire
Containment of the Bison Fire burning in Douglas County is expected by July 14 as firefighters had a series of setbacks because of windy conditions, the Bureau of Land Management reports in its Monday morning briefing.
The fire has been downgraded to 15 percent contained with the wind event that occurred Sunday afternoon, according to the Great Basin Management Type II Team, operating under Incident Commander Mike Whalen
The BLM reports the fire was extremely active on the northeast side Sunday afternoon and into the evening. Contingency plans remain in place for positioning of both air and ground resources should the fire move further to the east.
No injuries have been reported, but the fire ran through the Slate Mine area destroying several old structures. The number of structures destroyed is not known at this time.
Pine Nut Road remains closed to non-residents at the intersection of Out-R-Way. A voluntary evacuation notice remains in effect for about 20 structures in the area.
A number of private ATVs, motorcycles and other vehicles were seen very close to the fire area. the BLM and Sierra Front asks the public to stay away from the fire area.
