With a windy cool down headed our way, activities around the Carson City area Wednesday, June 26 will make for a breezy good time. Looking at the day ahead there's a walk hosted by parks and recreation, kids events, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center, a free "rough cut" feature film screening at the Carson Nugget, Young Chautauquans at Dangberg Historic Park and more.

SPARKS, Nev. — With summer arriving and more people heading outdoors to enjoy the season, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest would like to remind visitors and residents in communities adjacent to the Forest to be extra cautious while engaging in activities that could start a wildfire.

UPDATE 518PM: The fire burning south of Dayton is on BLM property. Readers say the fire appears to be growing and wind may be fueling it. We will update as information is made available from the BLM. Here's the latest messaging from Central Lyon County Fire:

Anticipation of graduation and trepidation about the future are the thoughts running through the veins of the Carson High School Class of 2019 as they contemplate walking onto the football field as high school seniors and bouncing off the football field as CHS graduates looking forward to the new places and faces of tomorrow.

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

Incline Village, Nevada is one of the more scenic municipalities in the nation. A big part of the splendor is not only Lake Tahoe but the proximity of vast tracts of coniferous forest. Throughout the basin, many million-dollar homes are nestled among towering, 100-year-old Jeffrey pines, but the nearness of big trees and vast forests comes with a potentially high price.

Due to anticipated cold, wet, windy weather conditions Carson City Sheriff’s Office regrets to inform the community of the cancellation of the Cops and Kids Safe Streets Party which was scheduled for Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An unusual and persistent weather pattern will send cold Pacific storms into the Carson City region Wednesday through early next week, a pattern that is more typical of early March rather than late May.

For Carson City and throughout western Nevada we can expect periods of rain and strong gusty winds and for the Sierra, heavy wet snow starting at around 8,000 feet and dropping to 6,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Unfavorable weather conditions may cause significant disruption in the planned outdoor activities. The event cannot be relocated indoors as accommodations are limited. The 16th annual Cops and Kids Safe Streets Party, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, will be held Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office administration building, 911 East Musser Street.

Public safety, awareness and community are at the center of this popular annual spring event where the theme is “Cops and Kids: Where the Community and Law Enforcement Come Together.”

Sure it's tax day and all and sure the weather outside is expected to be windy with a chance of showers. But these shouldn't shake your enthusiasm for another awesome day in our great capital city. On the windy morning of Saturday, April 6th, local gardening experts presented and answered questions at the Greenhouse Project’s Foothill Garden.

They were joined by the Greenhouse Garden Center, the Carson City Chamber Leadership Group of 2019, and the Great Basin Beekeepers of Nevada. Each organization presented their information on the variety of aspects that make a successful garden.

Jordan Aaron was the president of a Carson City sushi restaurant who once ran for justice of the peace in Arizona. Antonio Pastini was the brash ex-Chicago cop who befriended a brothel mogul and spun yarns of a bare-knuckled youth in the Windy City that read like a cross between “Goodfellas” and “The Outsiders.”
They were one and the same person.

It will come as no surprise to residents of northern Nevada to hear the weather is often windy and gusty in these parts. That wind can cause for, what I like to call, "shopping cart destruction."

Considerably more snow fell in parts of Carson City overnight Saturday into Sunday morning than regional weather forecasts had estimated.

In Northwest Carson City near Western Nevada College, about 12 more inches accumulated overnight.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit began the sale of Christmas tree permits on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018. Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest have been available since Nov. 1.

A low pressure system moving into the Carson City region will bring strong gusty winds Sunday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for much of Western Nevada.

Hot and windy conditions are creating extreme fire behavior on the Boot Fire that is burning nine miles southwest of Walker, California.

Nevada's State Forester Fire Warden Kacey KC on Friday ordered fire and travel restrictions for Northern and Eastern Nevada state and private lands, including state parks.

UPDATE 11:53AM: Carson City and Gardnerville was downgraded to the "unhealthy" category on the Air Quality Index after remaining in the moderate level until around 10 a.m. The "unhealthy" category, in which Carson City was 161 and Gardnerville 162, means everyone may begin to experience health effects, members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.

Smoke-filled skies continue to grip Carson City and Western Nevada on Wednesday though some of the haze has eased since the first part of the week.

Our poor trees, shrubs and other plants are stuck in place, "standing" in scorching sun and dealing with desiccating winds and high temperatures. Humidity is low and there’s little chance of a significant rain event until the fall.

It’s up to us to provide what our plants need to survive the heat.

With drying vegetation, increased daytime temperatures and several human-caused fires so far in 2018, fire restrictions on most federal public land in western Nevada begins Saturday and will last until further notice.

My friend Jose asked me if he sprayed cheatgrass would it sterilize the seeds. He hoped if he applied an herbicide before weed-eating, it would kill the seeds, which were going to be spread all over as he cut.

The answer, unfortunately, is “no.”

UPDATE FRIDAY: The Voltaire Fire is 100 percent contained at 517 acres. Fire personnel on scene is 164 people, the area will be monitored throughout the weekend, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Voltaire Fire in southwest Carson City that was ignited by campers burning human waste Tuesday night is nearing 100 percent containment, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Carson High School graduated about 465 seniors Saturday at its Carson City football stadium.

Under sunny skies and windy conditions with C-Hill serving as a backdrop, members of the CHS Class of 2018 in words and on their mortarboards, praised their parents, families and teachers for believing in them.

With an event-filled weekend ahead across the Carson City region, skies will be mostly clear and sunny, however it will be especially windy Saturday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a red flag fire weather warning for the Western Nevada Sierra Front below 5,000 feet.
