Carson City area weather: Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning for region
A low pressure system moving into the Carson City region will bring strong gusty winds Sunday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for much of Western Nevada.
Windy conditions will develop on Sunday with gusts in the 30-40 mph range and high temperatures ranging from the lower 60s well north of I-80 and near the Sierra to the 70s for west central Nevada.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday for the western Nevada Sierra Front and Eastern Sierra. This includes Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County, Reno, Sparks and South Lake Tahoe.
Although winds and cloud coverage will increase, precipitation chances will be limited to areas near the Oregon border, leaving the Sierra and western Nevada region dry.
Very low humidity aloft could surface and cause critical conditions to persist overnight tonight, especially for mid-slope and ridgetop locations. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
Winds should ease going into Monday with mostly sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s for the week.
