Cooperative Extension: Helpful Tips from Aging Gardeners

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about my body demanding that I change my overly athletic approach to gardening. The following are some great ideas that readers sent me on gardening smarter.

Patty suggests Flexilla lightweight garden hoses because they are easier to drag around and coil up more easily than most hoses. Another helpful suggestion was to use a lightweight plastic snow shovel with a long handle as a dustpan for raking and sweeping to reduce bending.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report

Hello fellow anglers. Now that our evening daylight is getting shorter, take advantage of as much fishing time you can get. On the bright side, on Dec. 22, the days will start getting longer by 1 minute each day. Also remember that you have until Saturday, Nov. 15, to get in your last bit of fishing on the California rivers and streams as the season will come to a close.

There will be some areas on the Carson River and the American River that is open to fishing all year long with restrictions of zero limit and a barbless hook. Check your regulations for these areas.

Washoe Lake Night Ride

A few years of below average snowfall has rendered Washoe Lake a small pond. It doesn’t happen very often, but occasionally Washoe Lake will disappear completely in such conditions. After a recent hike out onto the dry lake bed to investigate the conditions, I realized what a fun ride it’d be to explore the area on fat bikes while we had the chance. It also happened that our first window to do the ride came about during the evening after the sun went down.

Permits available for fall open burn in Carson City

The Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning Oct. 11 to Nov. 9, 2014. The open burn period gives residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris.

In order to make this a safe endeavor for those involved, the Carson City Fire Department will require a burn permit with a valid permit number before burning will be allowed. Permits must be obtained no less than 24 hours prior to conducting an open burn.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Labor Day weekend Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report

Hello fellow anglers, welcome to Labor Day weekend. It seems as though the summer flew by again, and here we are going into September. Last week Renee and I spent a few days in Alpine County. We set up base camp at the Carson River Resort. The resort is centralized in the area we enjoy fishing the most. We started on the East Carson River and worked our way up to Wolf Creek and Silver Creek. The water flows have slowed down but are still very fishable.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report for week of August 14

Hello fellow anglers. Two weeks ago we headed out to go fishing but I made a small mistake, when I got to Highway 395 I went north instead of south.  Seven hours later we ended up in Rogue River Oregon, which is a few miles south of Grants Pass.

We stayed with family and did a lot of fishing on the Rogue River until the 107 degree heat drove us to the coast.
There, we fished out of Brookings, Oregon for salmon. The temperature was a nice 65 degrees. We fished  for a couple hours with no success so we drove the boat up the coast a few miles and fished for cod.
