I first heard about the Rodale Institute a few decades ago when I used to read their “Organic Gardening” magazine. They have been around for 60 years researching and teaching organic gardening. Weeds are taking off. Some are already blooming. Yesterday I saw my first bur buttercup, Ceratocephala testiculata, in bloom. While this tiny little winter annual with its petite yellow flower doesn’t seem like much at two inches tall, its Velcro-like seed heads wind themselves up in an animal’s hair and eventually have to be cut out.

The average carrot travels over 1,800 miles to get to our dinner plates. Processing and shipment of food accounts for 93 percent of our food cost. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering eight new “Grow Your Own, Nevada!” classes at 12 locations statewide to help Nevadans who want to get on a path to more sustainable, local, healthy living by growing more of their own food.

A newly released scientific study highlights the importance of collaborative work to prevent the introduction of aquatic invasive species at Lake Tahoe, and confirms what many public and private stakeholders have feared: That the invasive quagga mussel, if introduced, could establish in our mountain lake’s clear, iconic waters.

On Saturday March 14, Cyrus Stokes (16 years old) a member of Boy Scout Troop 65, completed his Eagle Scout project. The Project took place in Carson City, at the Empire Cemetery.
Cyrus Stokes researched the names and history of many of the persons buried, adding this information to the individual graves. Stokes was supported by his parents, Richard and Keli Stokes, along with 60 others who came to help clean up weeds and brush that disrupted the gravesides.

The Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning March 14 to April 12. The purpose of the open burn period is to provide residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris.

In order to make this a safe endeavor for those involved, the Carson City Fire Department will require a burn permit with a valid permit number before burning will be allowed. Permits must be obtained no less than 24 hours prior to conducting an open burn.

Oh, the vagaries of gardening, landscaping and predicting the weather in Northern Nevada! I recently wrote about trees needing water after months of little to no precipitation. Then, lo and behold, Mother Nature took charge providing a thorough soaking. It rained five inches at my house.

This warm winter weather makes weeds grow. A few weeks ago, I saw filaree blooming. Cheatgrass is growing, even with the drought. As these and other winter annual weeds grow and before the spring weeds get started, people are thinking of spraying. They want to kill weeds that have started and prevent any new weeds from germinating in the first place.

The Tahoe Fund announced Monday the election of Kevin Marshall, Pete Sonntag and Julie Motamedi Teel to its board of directors. The three new members each bring a strong commitment and love of the Lake to their positions.

They are charged with helping the organization expand its impact by growing support of environmental improvement projects that will restore and enhance the Tahoe environment.

On a cold and windy morning in November, 45 men and women took to the hills in the Bodie Hills to plant as many sagebrush seedlings as they could in a two-day span. Besides the cold, the work itself was physically demanding as each seedling had to be planted by hand. What makes this story even more interesting is the fact that many of the people on those hills volunteered to be there.
