Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. Leis are the preferred accessory for Lei Day at the Nevada State Museum where you’ll be treated to Polynesian surprises and free admission. With three local theater groups performing this weekend, you’re sure to find a performance that’s right up your alley. Read on and be prepared to be bombarded with options.

It’s mid-April and lawns are starting to green up. I forgot to do my fall fertilization in October, and the grass really needs a
boost. There are weeds, especially clover, invading thinner areas of the lawn.

During Earth Week, Carson City has some special events to celebrate our beautiful valley.

CARSON CITY — University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and their Certified Master Gardeners offer free gardening classes in February and March. “Gardening in Nevada: The Bartley Ranch Series” is for anyone who wants to garden – those with big yards, small yards, or just patio or balcony space.

CARSON CITY — University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will offer a series of eight classes for those in the green industry beginning Feb. 1. The program benefits people wanting to enter the industry, beginners in the industry and established industry professionals.

I was recently reading a magazine called “Garden Design” that featured award-winning eco-friendly gardens. In it was a story by Louisa Jones about ecologist and landscape architect, Gilles Clément. He is renowned for his concept of the “Moving Garden.” It is a concept of biological gardening, the idea of working with, not against nature.

In cooperation with Capital Sanitation and Waste Management, Christmas trees can be placed curbside in Carson City on regular trash collection days or taken to a drop off location. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch.

Hello fellow anglers, we are getting closer to the Topaz opening day fishing season. The lake will open on Jan. 1, 2018. Some important things to do before the season opens. Time to change that line and lubricate your fishing reel.

Hello fellow anglers, the 2017 California fishing season has closed in Inyo and Mono counties for lakes and streams. Alpine County rivers and streams have also officially closed for the season. With the exception of the East Carson River that flows form Hangman's Bridge to the Nevada state line, this section is open all year with special regulations.

Hello fellow anglers, you still have time to wet a line in our local area rivers and streams. Nov. 15 is the final day to fish rivers and streams in Alpine County and much of the Sierra. Lake fishing, however, will remain open through the winter season for some but not all Sierra lakes. In a later article, we will discuss the joys of ice fishing.

Hello fellow anglers, fall fishing is in the air. This is an awesome time of year to fish the Carson River in Alpine County and nearby Sierra lakes. The waters are running perfect and the colors are spectacular. Plus the fishing is downright fantastic.

Hello fellow anglers, fall has fallen and brought the down the temperatures with it. Last week camping with the Ness family, we hit a whopping low of 24 degrees one night. That is hardcore camping when you are in a tent. For those that want to get in a few last camping trips, you have better hurry up.

Hello fellow anglers, I just returned from fishing Topaz Lake with friend Tom Blotter. We had a great day of fishing, but to see the devastation from the Slinkard Fire was hard to accept. We saw where the fire came within feet from homes in the Topaz area.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents a free Safety Day event for children and their families. The event, held in partnership with local businesses, organizations and agencies, is 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 9, at Mills Park, 111 E. William St. in Carson City.

Hello fellow anglers, I have been away for a couple weeks fishing in Oregon and northern California. Oh did we get into some nice fish, which I will give you the full story at the end of this report.

Trash Mobs are a grassroots community effort coordinated by Muscle Powered volunteers to keep the walkways and bike paths around Carson City free of litter.

The monthly, one-hour events take place at various locations around town that are in need of cleaning. Volunteers, who are supplied with work gloves and trash bags by Muscle Powered staff, remove litter from areas often used by citizens for recreational purposes such as walking, jogging or cycling.

Please tell the Lahontan Waterboard to put a stop to the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) proposal to put chemicals into the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe!

Hello fellow anglers, is it hot enough for you? Recently it has felt like the line from that Mark Chesnutt country song, where he sings "It's Too Hot to Fish."

A reader sent me photos and questions recently stating: “I’ve seen this 'growth' on various garden plants at just a couple homes in my neighborhood. They struggled to get rid of it.

"Just recently, I found this growing out in the desert on BLM land about a mile or two past our neighborhood," the reader wrote, "and would like to know what it is, if it's going to spread, does it kill its host, and if I should do something about it.”

Hello fellow anglers, the weather is hot and the skies are like a stormy winters night with all the smoke in the area. As we venture out, there are a couple things to remember. You are only allowed to have an open campfire in designated campground.

American’s favorite crop to grow at home is the tomato. Few can resist the delicious flavor of a homegrown tomato.

Hello fellow anglers, If you are planing to take an adventure to Alpine County this weekend, remember the Death Ride bicycle event is on Saturday, July 8. There will be some temporary road closures on Monitor and Ebbetts passes south of Markleeville. Yes, Ebbetts Pass is now open. Most any place you go in Alpine County this weekend there will cyclists on the road.
