The Proscenium Players Inc. are performing War of the Worlds in the Brewery Art Center’s Black Box Theatre on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23. The shows starts at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles directed and narrated a radio drama adaptation of H.G. Wells’s novel War of the Worlds. Audiences tuned-in to hear the stories of Martians crash-landing on earth, not knowing it was only a play, and prompted news stories of widespread panic over a nonexistent alien invasion.

Chances are, even if it was on your high school literature class reading list, you have read a book that somebody somewhere wanted to ban.

Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library will be celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, readers will gather at the library to write letters to authors to show support for writing about controversial subjects.

CARSON CITY — This month’s convoy of vintage military vehicles that traveled though Nevada on U.S. Highway 50 was in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy.

On Thursday morning, a military convoy led by veterans and military enthusiasts stopped at the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City after having already driven 150 miles that morning.

CARSON CITY — A convoy of vintage military vehicles, making its way cross country to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Convoy from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco, will make a pit stop for lunch at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City on Thursday, Sept. 12.

Moving into Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, there's another chance for thunderstorms headed our way and then a bit of a cool down going into the weekend. Looking around the capital city Thursday there's a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, auditions for V&T Railway's Polar Express, art showings, a host of activities at the Carson City Library, a Muscle Powered morning hike and more.

Heading into midweek, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 and there's a chance of thunderstorms around the capital city with a cool down expected for the weekend. Looking ahead there's a new writer's group meeting — all aspiring wordsmiths welcome, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center, art demonstrations and more. Enjoy the day.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. the Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire will be the final special event of the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival. A celebration of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh people who helped to settle Carson Valley will offer a day filled with entertainment and activities for all ages.

Going into Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, we're looking at sunshine and temperatures in the low 90s. Events around the capital city include a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, a scary makeup demonstration at the Brewery Arts Center and the 1946 version of "The Postman Always Rings Twice," presented by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. The Commemorative Air Force B-17 Sentimental Journey will be in Douglas County at the Minden-Tahoe Airport arriving Tuesday, Sept. 3. The aircraft will be available for tours and flights, daily through Sept. 8.

The B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the most recognized WII bombers flying over Europe with the 8th Air Force out of England. It was made famous in movies like "Twelve O'Clock High" and "Command Decision."

Heading into Monday, Labor Day 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies, with daytime highs in the low 90s. There's no better place than Virginia City for a parade, and the Comstock continues to honor those who use elbow grease to keep the gears of our great American way grinding. Thank you. Other activities include a Tahoe beach cleanup, art showings, swing dancing and an interfaith picnic at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City, where folks of all religious stripes come together in fellowship and kindness. August closes with a Chautauqua presentation “Sisters of the Sage” which will highlight the lives of Annie H. Martin, Lillian V. Finnegan and Anna N. Harris at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed Thursday to accept the 90 percent design phase of the South Carson Street roundabout project following a presentation led by the city's chief engineer and comments from the public.

On Wednesday evening, the project was presented to the Carson City Regional Transportation Commission by chief engineer Dan Stucky. To date there have been 18 public meetings on this project.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Many folks have had enough of the anger, condescension, dishonesty, hate, bitterness, aggression, etc. that are so plentiful these days. So, despite my inclination to answer so much of it (and it needs to be answered), I write today about some reasons to be grateful for the world we inhabit -- and hopeful about the future.

This is an event like no other, where agencies who work in areas of public health and safety gather at Mills Park to meet with Carson City residents. This event features 3 hours of information booths, games, demonstrations, food and fun. Also happening Tuesday is a free robotics mini-camp for kids in nearby Silver City, Reciprocity Inc. will host a fundraiser at Rustically Divine, there's the Culinary Traveler’s Club's Polynesian Paradise featured at Bleu Café; the Carson City Classic Cinema Club will feature a Sci-Fi favorite at the BAC, plus fitness outings and more. A correctional officer with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in the San Francisco Bay Area has been identified as the man who died of an apparent drowning at Lake Tahoe's Zephyr Cove on Tuesday.
