The Nevada Department of Transportation encourages the public to comment on planned projects and improvements statewide and around Carson City including traffic signals, multi-use bicycle and pedestrian paths, JAC buses, landscaping, sidewalk and ADA improvements and Phase 3B reconstruction and expansion of the V&T Railroad Station.

Carson City's Fuji Dog Park to be closed for 2015 Nevada Fair

Beginning Monday, Fuji Dog Park at 601 Old Clear Creek Road will be closed to the public as a dog park in preparation of the Nevada Fair. The park will reopen for dog use on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Carson City Parks and Recreation encourages pet owners to take advantage of other "dog friendly" parks and paths in the area. Those parks are:

Carson City Library will present author Jack Harpster on Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30 PM in the library Digitorium. Harpster has written several biographies about historical entrepreneurs of the west.

His recently published work, “Lumber Baron of the Comstock Lode”, is a biography of Duane L. Bliss’s life and highlights his early days of lumbering activity during the Comstock period, as well as his involvement in the building of the V & T Railroad.

Small town, big fireworks and parade July 4 in Virginia City

Fourth of July on the Comstock in historic Virginia City, Nev. promises one of the region’s longest firework displays. Echoing off Mt. Davidson at 6,200 feet elevation, the “kaboom” rocks the old 1850s historic mining community as the fireworks soar high above the town and Six Mile Canyon, making it visible from nearly anywhere in town.

Firefighters serve up Saturday morning Breakfast for Books at Carson City Library

Carson City Library’s Summer Reading Program is getting help this morning from the Carson City Fire Department with a kickoff Breakfast for Books launch in the parking lot of the library. The breakfast runs until 10 a.m. Tickets are $3 and gets you a plate of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and juice.

This year’s program, Every Hero has a Story, will be hosted online, with participants signing up and tracking hours read at the carsoncitylibrary.com website. Each participant will be assigned an avatar. As that avatar progresses with minutes read and logged, prizes are unlocked for literary games, author videos and other rewards.

Pancake breakfast Saturday kicks off Carson City Library summer reading program

Carson City Library’s Summer Reading Program will kick off with the Breakfast for Books at 8-10 a.m. Saturday.
“It’s important kids keep reading in the summer so they start off strong in the fall,” said Heather Butler, youth services librarian. “This bridges the gap at the end of the school year.”

Holy convergence at Railroad Museum: Nevada restored, Vatican approved

Sunday mornings at the Nevada State Railroad Museum can be very, very special. On this Sunday morning we find three steam locomotives - the narrow gauge Glenbrook unveiled Saturday, circa 1875, the standard gauge Inyo, also circa, 1875, and the standard gauge V&T No. 25, circa 1905 converging at the Diamond and blessed by Father Joe from the Vatican.

The V&T Steam Engine #25 will be running all weekend if you want to take a ride. It’s also opening weekend for the Virginia and Truckee that departs from the Eastgate Depot in Carson City for Virginia City. Round trips sell out fast, so make sure to get a reservation if you want to go.

Restored to its breathtaking beauty, steam locomotive Glenbrook is unveiled

Train buffs and dignitaries gathered at the Nevada Rail Road Museum under rainy skies, Saturday for the unveiling of the Glenbrook, a historic locomotive that once hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe sawmills to Spooner Summit.

“Nowhere else can you see an event like this,” said Peter Barton, Administrator of the Division of Museums and History. “We’ve done research before we started restoring, we spent months with historians and researchers. The locomotive has been painstakingly restored, no where else can you find a locomotive that has had so much time spent working on it.”

Two million riders and 40 years of V&T Railroad legacy in Virginia City

Looking good at 40 is not a problem for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, based in Virginia City. Dubbed “Queen of the Short Lines,” the V&T’s history goes back to 1938 when a 17-year-old Robert C. Gray was a passenger on the last V&T excursion to Virginia City from Carson City, Nev.

By 1943, it was saved from scrap and donated by the Bliss Family to the Nevada State Museum, where it pleased countless youngsters who crawled all over it outside the museum’s doors on Carson Street for four decades. Restored by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is under steam again.

Virginia City, Genoa and Incline Village on the shores of Lake Tahoe have been selected among Nevada's 10 most unique towns in the online publication the culturetrip.com.

Noting Nevada is the seventh largest state by area, the website describes the Silver State comes with a "great deal of open space, varying landscapes, and many small towns dotting the terrain." The CultureTrip.com website has previously featured Carson City and Virginia City area landmarks, museums and restaurants as unique or must-see stops for travelers.

The final weekend to take a train ride with Santa at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City has arrived. Today and Sunday the train will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Two Care Flight air ambulances land after vehicle crash on Highway 50 near V&T bridge

UPDATE 6:20PM: Highway 50 is now clear and moving freely after a two-vehicle injury accident this afternoon sent at least three to the hospital. What we know is two Care Flight helicopters landed, according to NHP Trooper Dave Gibson. One person was taken by ground ambulance, according to Central Lyon County Fire District. Their conditions are not known at this time.

It's Your City with Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell

This week's It's Your City is with Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell. Before providing an update on the Board of Supervisors, Crowell takes time to update citizens about local happenings including the Dec. 3 open house and ribbon cutting at the Nevada Humane Society Carson Shelter. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at 3770 Butti Way. The public is invited.

Late Fall Day at Treadway Park in Carson City

The nights are chilly but the fall days still warm up nicely (usually), In Carson City. Treadway Park is a quiet small gem of a park next to the Carson Tahoe Care Center (The "old" hospital ) and Carson Behavioral Health.

The park is close to where William Street ends west at Minnesota. Easy parking access is at 775 Fleischmann Street next to the hospital. Treadway Park is named in honor of a pioneer Carson City man, Aaron Treadway, who had a 10-acre ranch at this location.
