Vietnam veterans honored at ceremony in Carson City

Nevada Vietnam War veterans were honored Saturday in Carson City as dozens gathered in Mills Park to observe the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance and hold a welcome home ceremony at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial.

Frank Reynolds, current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) local chapter 388 in Carson City, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the chapter’s chaplain delivered the invocation.

Squeaky’s Car Wash opened in the spring and offers the community a safe, well-lit car wash using the best, brand-new equipment. Squeaky’s aims to not only become a favorite service in the area, but also a true community partner, supporting and thanking northern Nevada’s veterans and active military personnel.

Motorcycle rider involved in fatal Carson City crosswalk crash jailed on felony DUI charge

A Minden man was arrested in the Veterans Day 2014 motorcycle crash that killed a Carson City casino employee as he was walking through a crosswalk on Stewart Street.

Michael F. Trute, 56, turned himself into Carson City Jail deputies Wednesday, 11:20 a.m. for a felony warrant, driving under the influence of alcohol causing substantial bodily harm, issued June 30, 2015 out of Carson City Justice Court. His bail was set at $10,000.

Vietnam Veterans Day recognized Saturday in Carson City

Today, Saturday, is Vietnam Veterans Day in Carson City. The Carson Area Chapter 388 Vietnam Veterans of America is hosting the Vietnam Veterans Day “Welcome Home” celebration all day today at Mills Park. All veterans and the community are invited to come out to the park, view some of the exhibits, war-era vehicles, helicopters and equipment used during the war. Festivities and fellowship continue through 5:30 p.m.

The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

The Carson Area Chapter 388 Vietnam Veterans of America will host the Vietnam Veterans Day “Welcome Home” ceremony on Saturday, March 28, at the Nevada Vietnam Memorial located at Mills Park.

All Vietnam veterans and the public are invited to attend the ceremony, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that will honor those who served and came home and remembering Brothers and Sisters who served but never made it home.

WNC Exhibition 'Always Lost: A meditation on War' returns to Nevada Legislative Building

The Western Nevada College arts and humanities exhibition Always Lost: A Meditation on War returns to the Nevada Legislative Building ​April 6-22 ​during the 2015​ Legislative​ session.​ Always Lost will be on display in the second floor atrium​ of the Legislative Building​. A special opening ceremony is planned for Monday, April 6 from 10-10:30 a.m. in Room 1214.

Scheduled to speak at the opening are ​Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, Nevada Military and Veterans Policy Director Caleb Cage and Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell.

John Warne Remembers Sgt. Daniel 'Danny' Ackerman

Surrounded by small flags, empty gun shells, pioneer headstones and a poignant hand written card from an old girlfriend, where she wrote to him "it had been over forty years, I finally found you" is the grave marker of a Carson City Vietnam veteran, Sgt. Daniel Ackerman, who died in combat.

His body is buried at the old pioneer Empire Cemetery. His marker is in the southwest corner, high above the Carson River where Danny Ackerman loved to hunt, fish and hike around with his friends.

Nevada governor officially recognizes WNC war exhibit ‘Always Lost’ with Veterans Day proclamation

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval officially honored “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” Tuesday in a Veterans Day proclamation. The humanities exhibit, touring nationally, was created by Western Nevada College faculty and students in Carson City.

The proclamation notes 2014 is the “Year of the Veteran” in Nevada as it entered the Union during the Civil War and henceforth is called “Battle Born.”

Well-traveled World War II veteran ready for parade appearance

A well-traveled, 72-year-old World War II veteran is set to make a triumphant return Tuesday at the annual Veterans Day parade in Reno. A remodeled 1942 Dodge WC-54 3/4-Ton Army Ambulance, owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs and refurbished by the Nevada Army Guard, is set to make its first public appearance in years at the parade that begins at 11 a.m. on Virginia Street.

Governor unveils Nevada Fallen Heroes book on eve of Veterans Day

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval unveiled a living memorial Monday honoring Nevada's military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Nevada Fallen Heroes book will be displayed in the front entrance of the Nevada State Capitol building and contains the names of every Nevadan killed in action dating back to the Civil War.

"The Nevada Fallen Heroes Book will be a living memorial. Each of these names tells a different story. Each name represent dreams deterred," said the governor in his Twitter feed. "As we reflect on the names within this book, we must endeavor to uphold the ideals for which they gave their last full measure of devotion."

Pizza Factory offers free lunches for vets on Veterans Day

They say there's no such thing as a free lunch. But this Nov. 11, on Veterans Day, the Pizza Factory restaurants in Carson City, Dayton and across the west will treat veterans to lunch on the pizza chain's dime.

"We appreciate everything our veterans have done for our country and want to honor their service," says Mary Jane Riva, chief executive officer of Pizza Factory, which has 110 restaurants throughout Nevada, California Idaho, Washington, and Arizona.

The Carson City restaurant is located at 3120 Hwy 50 East. The Dayton restaurant is located at Pizza Factory 185 U.S. 50.

Mile High Jazz Band Presents November Jazz Nov. 11 in Carson City

Mile High Jazz Band presents November Jazz, a program of big band music, on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.

In honor of veterans, the band will play "Bugle Call Rag," "American Patrol," and "In the Mood." To reflect the change of season, they will perform "The Heat's On," "Early Autumn," and, with band vocalist Cindee LeVal, "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening." LeVal will be featured in several selections.

Carson City residents answer the call, donate hundreds of household items to local veterans

When the Sierra-Tahoe Unit-137 of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association asked for donations in an inaugural “drive by” collection Saturday for homeless veterans recently placed in housing, Carson City residents answered the call.

Hundreds of slightly used and new household items filling more than a hundred boxes were collected Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall on 2nd and Curry Street. The “Drive by Car Hop” exceeded all expectations, organizers say.

Carson Nugget gives local Vietnam vets group $1,130 it collected from March event

The Carson Nugget presented members of the Carson City Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America a check for $1,131.80 to show its support for the group and its efforts in supporting fellow war veterans.

Carson Area 4-H spring community service benefits Reno veteran’s home

For the last several months members of the Silver Sage 4-H Community Club and the Bouncing Bunnies 4-H Club collected, organized and delivered food and cleaning items to the Veterans Guest House in Reno.
