This year, Leadership class has determined the theme will be Winterflix, a play on the popular Netflix streaming service that allows customers to watch a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, documentaries, and more on thousands of internet-connected devices.

For meteorologists, effectively communicating weather forecasts and their related dangers is essential in maintaining the health, safety and resilience of communities. A new study published by a team of researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno, the Desert Research Institute and the National Weather Service in Reno suggests that effective communication isn’t only about sharing information on upcoming weather events, it’s about building trust and common ground between forecasters and the public.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will offer a series of eight classes for those in the green industry beginning Jan. 29. GRAMMY award-winning drummer and educator John Riley will share the stage with the 17-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) on Sunday, February 10 at Nightingale Concert Hall located at the University of Nevada, Reno. The concert starts at 2:00 p.m. and will include a variety of jazz and blues music.

The Carson City School District welcomes two new school board members: Lupe Ramirez, District 1, and Richard Varner, District 4. CARSON CITY — The Stewart Indian School Preservation Alliance, in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission, will be premiering a new documentary, “Stewart Indian School: Home of the Braves,” on Monday, Dec. 17 at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.

TACH (Traditional Association for Cultural Harmony), a non-profit organization founded by internationally-renowned musician Thakur Chakrapani Singh is going to present “World Music Award Night” on Dec. 16, 2018 at 4 p.m.

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City will be hosting a book signing featuring more than a dozen Nevada authors. The Autumn Book Signing event is Saturday, Dec. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will be held in the Dema Guinn Concourse of the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. Admission to the book signing is free. Light refreshments will be served.

RENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.

The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports slick road conditions on highways throughout western Nevada and Sierra on Wednesday morning. The Nevada Department of Transportation is clearing and sanding roads between Carson Valley, Carson City and Reno as well as along Highway 50.
