In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City has a host of activities and programs planned this week that aim to look back at the past, learn about the present and inspire the future.

The University of Nevada has announced that students who were set to be put up in the Argenta Dormitory at the Reno campus will now be relocated to a tower at Circus Circus following the July 5 explosion that destroyed a good amount of the building and left a handful of students with minor injuries.

In addition, the resident dining facility on the first floor of Argenta, in which all dormitory students with paid meal plans eat during the year for most meals, was also damaged and will remain closed for the next academic year.

CARSON CITY — Fifty years after Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took “one giant leap for mankind,” the image of putting a man on the moon remains a source of pride wrapped in awe for most Americans.

The young and young of heart still dream of becoming astronauts and most people 50-plus can tell you where they were and what they were doing that July day in 1969.

Since last week, when the State Fire Marshal announced preliminary findings regarding the cause of the explosion that damaged Argenta and Nye Halls on July 5, the University has made significant progress in several areas regarding the students affected, making arrangements for the upcoming Fall 2019 semester and planning for the longer-term. Here are some of the most recent developments:

This month, Todd Morgan & the Emblems return for a third season and historian Dr. Michael Fischer will speak on the history of the Nevada Buckaroo at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "Fast Lane/Slow Bake" by artists Cyndy Brenneman and Tom Drakulich in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City.

The exhibition runs now to Oct. 24, 2019. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, July 12, 5-7 p.m. in the Sierra Room, and the artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced Friday the awarding of more than $1 million in statewide grants to 172 recipients ranging from individual artists to nonprofit organizations and public institutions for the 2020 fiscal year.

The Artisan Cafe in Carson City will host a collection drive Monday, with organizers asking Carson City residents to donate items needed for students affected by the explosion at Argenta Hall on the University of Nevada, Reno campus Friday.

UPDATE 5:00 p.m.: Officials are now calling it a “mechanical failure.” Crews continue to search the wreckage for anyone who may be trapped. All streets within a half mile of the campus are closed. Major damage is being reported at Argenta Hall; however, they believe the building was mostly unoccupied at the time of the explosion.

UPDATE 4:00 p.m.: So far, reports of 8 people were injured and two have been transferred to the hospital. All classes for the rest of the day have been cancelled.

CARSON CITY — Chinese immigrants were abundant in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevada in the latter half of the 19th century.

In the 1860s, the first Chinese immigrants found their way to Aurora, Nevada and by the 1870s, they had settled along King Street in Bodie, California, creating a sizeable Chinatown. By the 1880s, they cornered the woodcutting market, providing cordwood and charcoal to neighboring residents, businesses, and ranches.

Co-sponsored by Citizens' Climate Lobby, GreenACTNV, and Western Nevada College, this event focuses on the implications of climate change for businesses and the recreation economy in Western Nevada and Lake Tahoe.

This is an opportunity to learn more about the impacts of droughts, floods, fires, and warming temperatures on our regional economy and future generations.

RENO — An ongoing sequence of more than 60 small earthquakes that began in the early morning hours today is centered in the Sun Valley area – they are too small to be felt. But, more than 1,200 people filed “felt reports” following the magnitude 3.7 earthquake in Washoe Valley the night of June 6. The shaking is a gentle reminder that Nevadans live in the third most seismically active state in the nation, behind Alaska and California.

Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. CARSON CITY — In the final year of his 42-year career and his 10th as Nevada's adjutant general, Brig. Gen. William Burks will be this year's keynote speaker at the Nevada National Guard's 21st annual Flag Day ceremony and U.S. Army's 244th birthday celebration 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on Capitol grounds, 101 N. Carson St.

The state of Nevada took a big-league swing this week.

Three players from the University of Nevada, Reno and two more from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas were drafted to the Major Leagues during the three-day event featuring 40 rounds and more than 1,215 selections.

Among the 29 recipients of Greater Nevada Credit Union’s 2019 scholarship program, seven students are from Carson City.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host an opening reception on Friday, June 7, 5 to 7 p.m. The artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition will be in the gallery from June 7 to Sept. 26, 2019.

Anticipation of graduation and trepidation about the future are the thoughts running through the veins of the Carson High School Class of 2019 as they contemplate walking onto the football field as high school seniors and bouncing off the football field as CHS graduates looking forward to the new places and faces of tomorrow.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce, of any high school, Carson High School retains the most National Merit and Presidential Scholars committing to the University of Nevada, Reno. Fourteen CHS seniors pledged to continue their education with the university during the Nevada Scholars Signing Day, held in the CHS library Wednesday, May 22.

School is out or wrapping up for summer break and students from universities, colleges and high schools across Nevada are prepared to make the walk to receive their diplomas. To celebrate these achievements, consumers in the Silver State will spend an estimated $86.8 million, according to projections by the Retail Association of Nevada.

The University of Nevada, Reno through the weekend will be conferring 3,201 degrees, the most degrees ever distributed in one semester.

Due to inclement weather, all ceremonies were moved to the Lawlor Events Center instead of the University’s quad.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

CARSON CITY — Nicolas Jacques, music teacher at Carson Middle School, was honored last night as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, James “Jim” Pike, special needs school bus driver for transportation, was recognized as the Education Support Professional (ESP) Employee of the Year for the district.

Our wonderful father, husband, brother and friend Rich Sorenson made his way to heaven on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at the young age of 66. He was surrounded by family and friends as he, in his words, went before us to “get the party started” with Jesus!

CARSON CITY — Nevada’s theatrical history is long, rich and storied — from Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City to the McKissick Theater in Reno to the Eureka Opera House to the casino showrooms big and small around the state.
