Taste of Downtown

Taste of Downtown is a delicious accomplishment

Carson City community members flooded downtown for Taste of Downtown, Saturday evening with their stomachs growling, ready to taste the delicious foods of local businesses. Taste of Downtown gave guests a wide range of dinner entrees, promoted local businesses and supported Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Guests listened to eight local bands throughout the evening and tasted food and refreshments from 39 local businesses.

The solstice couldn’t come at a better time: we need some long days to get through all the fun stuff Carson City has crammed into one weekend. The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Music, food, and more from Carson Mall to Williams Street. Have a great time, and be safe.

Splurge, (as defined at Dictionary.com) is: to indulge oneself in some luxury or pleasure. Its National Splurge Day, so treat yourself to some Taste of Downtown tickets. Head over to the Purple Avocado, Classy Seconds Gift Store, or the Chamber of Commerce and plan on indulging for a good cause. Indulge in some live music at the Brewery Arts Center tonight: Whatitdo from Reno will be playing in the Black Box Theater.

Get your appetites ready and your tickets now as the 22nd annual Taste of Downtown Carson City will arrive this Saturday, June 20 with at least 40 restaurants on hand to dish up, flip, baste, slather and pour on their menu specialities for ticketholders.

Today is National Nature Photography Day, so have at it. Find something beautiful and take a snapshot. It’s also National Smile Power Day, so you may as well take some pictures of smiling faces as well. Do something to make Monday a little brighter and the day will fly by. The Friends of the Carson City Library are having a half-off everything sale at Browsers Corner Book Store all week, so go in and find yourself a summer read. Don’t forget to head into Classy Seconds Thrift Shop this week and grab a ticket for Taste of Downtown: it hits the streets on Saturday.

You can meet Author Laura Lea White at the Browser’s Corner Book Shop tonight; copies of her book ‘Generational Gifts: The Legacy of Evelyn Marie’ will be available. Silver Dollar Cruise Night is at Dunkin' Donuts; every Thursday through summer you'll find hot rods, street racers, and cool old cars at a different location.

I’m hoping everyone had a great weekend. Now that we’ve moved into June, the events will just keep coming. Blinky Man and the Historical Society Garden Tour are coming up on Saturday. Fathers’ Day weekend brings the Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School and the Taste of Downtown. The last weekend of the month welcomes Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly with the Twelve Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge to downtown. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though. We still need to survive Monday.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence aims for $1,000 through Big Give for client computer

Today is Nevada's Big Give and Advocates to End Domestic Violence, based in Carson City, has a goal to raise $1,000 so it can purchase a computer system for clients in the emergency shelter.

Many of the Advocate clients enter the shelter without a job, food stamps, Medicaid, etc. and struggle to complete all of the applications on the computer it currently has.

Letter: Victims should be priority when selecting District Attorney

As the lead prosecutor, a District Attorney’s priorities are two: 1) justice and 2) victims. Only one candidate for District Attorney understands this, Mark Krueger. Mr. Krueger has experience. He successfully prosecuted dozens of jury trials involving the family of murder victims, sexual assault victims, and children victims.

Best Taste winner Sassafras looking for a new home

Winning Best Taste for this year's Taste of Downtown is bittersweet for the owners of Sassafras, as their landlord has given them until the end of July to vacate that space.

"We are devastated, shocked, heartbroken," said Scott Doerr, who owns the business with partner and chef Tony Fish.

Doerr said they were presented with a termination of tenancy on June 16 by Double Eagle Cubed LLC, the entity that purchased the building from Magpie Properties, LLC last year.

Here are the winners of the 21st annual Taste of Downtown Carson City. Saturday's event, which brought thousands to the downtown area and had more than 40 restaurants represented in the mix, was the main fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The winners were voted on by ticket holders of the main event.

A Taste of Downtown Is a Taste of Success

The 21st annual Taste of Downtown kicked off Saturday evening and continued early into Sunday morning in Carson City. From Fifth Street on the event covered 13 city blocks, packing the sidewalks with locals and visitors. With restaurants and bars from near and far all setting up stands with the hopes of being voted Carson City's best, there was no shortage of food, drinks or fun in the thriving heart of downtown.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through June 22

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 16-22, 2014. Vista Grande Boulevard will continue to be closed from Topsy Lane to Old Clear Creek Road with a signed detour. There will also be intermittent delays on Old Clear Creek Road near the intersection with Vista Grande Boulevard.

There will be a lane shift on Northridge Drive and the sidewalk will be closed on the north side of the street near the intersection with Roop Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Carson City's 21st annual Taste of Downtown tickets go on sale

Tickets are on sale now for Carson City's culinary event of the year, the 21st annual Taste of Downtown, June 21 in Carson City.

More than 40 restaurants and nine bands are participating in this signature event that spans 13 blocks and is the major fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence. Tasting begins at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until 9 p.m. Live bands will be located throughout downtown with music playing until midnight.

Sheriff: Reported crimes down in Carson City during event-filled weekend

With tens of thousands of people in Carson City last weekend for local events including Taste of DownTown, the Carson City Airport Open House and the Father's Day Powwow, law enforcement arrest records show a relatively quiet weekend.

"We had an excellent weekend and it goes to show that when there are positive family and community events happening around town, the amount of crimes reported falls very low from all points, north to south, east to west and downtown," said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

More than 2,000 hungry locals and visitors filled downtown Carson City Saturday night for the 19th annual Taste of Downtown, a culinary event over 20 blocks that featured 43 restaurants, seven bands and plenty of community bonding.
From tangy barbecue ribs to fresh made pizza and lasagna, authentic tacos, sushi rolls and decadent desserts, there was more than enough food and good times to go around for this Carson City culinary fundraiser that benefits Advocates to End Domestic Violence.
