Two Carson City school teachers earn national board certification, one renews

The Carson City School District is celebrating two new National Board Certified Teachers from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. Recognition will come at Tuesday’s school board meeting. NBCT is widely considered to be the highest professional recognition for educators and includes a five percent pay increase in acknowledgement of accomplished teaching.

Last Saturday I was part of the Rotary Club's Shopping Spree. This annual event pairs a Rotarian with a needy child in hopes of purchasing gifts for the child and members of his/her family.

The young man that I accompanied was a rather precocious and talkative eight-year old who was a bit jaded when it came to acknowledging the magic of Christmas. However, during the shopping part of the activity, my new young friend became very animated and hopeful as he talked about selecting gifts for his family and for himself.

Carson City schools see hike in graduation rates for fourth straight year

For the fourth year in a row, Carson City School District’s high school students graduated at the highest rate ever at 86.79 percent for the Class of 2019, an increase of 6.48 percentage points since 2016 where it averaged 80.31 percent.

Carson City School District, trustees haul in awards at 2019 NASB Conference

The Carson City School District was a point of highlight at the Nevada Association of School Boards annual conference in Reno, the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The school district and trustees hauled in nearly a quarter of all the awards (4 out of 19) among the 17 districts statewide.

Carson City School Board to discuss potential solution to middle school overcrowding

The Carson City School District will be holding its upcoming meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

A discussion and possible action will be on the table for proposed capital projects as supported by the facilities master plan committee, including construction of classrooms at Eagle Valley Middle School intended to alleviate student overcrowding at Carson Middle School, in an estimated amount not to exceed $8.2 million, which will be financed by the sale of the 2019B school bonds.

Carson City School District could save millions with purchase of former church campus

UPDATE WEDNESDAY: The Carson City School District Board of Trustees approved last night to send a letter of intent with $50,000 earnest money. The school district will have 90 days to do all the surveys and inspections as well as decide what the campus could be, including another elementary school, middle school, fine arts center or GATE program.

Carson City's Pioneer High School graduates 56, breaks record for scholarships received

Pioneer High School held a graduation ceremony Tuesday evening at the Carson City Community Center to commemorate the achievements of 56 students who completed their high school coursework.

Between the 56 students, they secured nearly $125,000 in awards and scholarships to assist with continuing education, which is a new record for the high school.

"Winterflix," a play on the popular Netflix streaming service, was the theme this year at the 2019 Winterfest week at CHS with dress-up days and night-time activities all week long. Some of the events included the Netflix show, "Stranger Things," a Twins Day, "Riverdale," "The Office," and even the ever popular once-a-month Dress for Success competition.

Senator Square: Speech and Debate Tournament a success at Carson High School

CHS hosted the Northern Nevada Forensic League tournament last weekend.

New members, leadership roles in place on Carson City School Board

The Carson City School District welcomes two new school board members: Lupe Ramirez, District 1, and Richard Varner, District 4. Ramirez and Varner were accompanied by Stacie Wilke-McCulloch, District 3, and Don Carine, District 6, at the Carson City Court House Monday, Jan. 7, as all four took their oaths of office and were sworn in as elected city officials.
