Carson City area weather: Valley rain this weekend, heavy snow for Sierra

With a weekend of Christmas holiday events across the Carson City region, it looks like Mother Nature will be active with valley rain beginning late Friday and feet of snow in the Sierra through Sunday.

Two storms systems, one Wednesday and the other to arrive late Friday, are forecast to bring valley rain and Sierra snow to the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Events include the 31st season of the Nutcracker Ballet, a Feast with a Hero fundraiser at Slot World, Small Business Saturday throughout Carson City and Carson Valley, photos with Santa, a Telegraph Square sign dedication, Polar Express train rides at the V&T Railroad and more!

After-hours burglary being investigated after man found dead from fall at Carson City shopping center

UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says the incident, in which a man was found dead after apparently falling through the roof at a Carson City shopping center business, is being investigated as a possible after-hours burglary and that the deceased man had been dead for some time.

According to Sheriff Furlong, workers at a hair salon came into the business to open up for the day. When they arrived they found a deceased male on the ground, who appeared to have fallen through the ceiling.

Carson City Fire Department responded early Sunday morning to a report of a structure fire in the 3100 block of Stafford Way.

Vandals struck the Northridge area sometime on Saturday night throwing eggs at vehicles, including two belonging to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

Plumas County wildfire prompts smoke advisory for northern Nevada, Carson City region

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has cancelled the Dense Smoke Advisory for the Greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas as visibility and air quality have improved across much of the area. Haze will likely remain in the valleys around the Reno metro area through the rest of the day.

The Walker Fire burning in northern California's Plumas County has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a dense smoke advisory for portions of northern and western Nevada, through 11 p.m. Sunday.

The advisory is for Lassen and Eastern Plumas counties, Eastern Sierra County, northern Washoe County, the Greater Reno area as well as Carson City and Carson Valley in Douglas County.

34th annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival brings national, local musical blends

National and local bands converged on Bowers Mansion Saturday during the 34th annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival.

Attendees by the hundreds set up low-backed chairs, picnic blankets or simply laid down on the grass as an enticing lineup of bands took the stage.

The 34th annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival is back this weekend from Aug. 16-18 beginning with the Rattlesnake Mountain Boys kicking things off at the Davis Creek Amphitheater at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Bluegrass bands both national and local will convene at the historic mansion along with kids activities, food trucks, games, and more!

Carson City emergency crews called to vehicle crash near Mills Park

Carson City emergency crews were called late Sunday morning to a motor vehicle crash across from Mills Park in the 800 block of East William Street.

Second in 2 days: Carson City Fire Department called to brush fire near landfill

UPDATE 10:51AM: Smoldering material from Friday's fire at the landfill caused it to reignite and burn around a 20 foot by 20 foot swath before being knocked down, according to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. The cause of Friday's fire remains under investigation. The area is being monitored by public works.

Carson City emergency crews respond to crash at Carson and Winnie

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday morning to a two-vehicle accident near the intersection of North Carson Street and Winnie Lane.

Is it March or May? Cold, windy and wet storms through Tuesday

An unusual and persistent weather pattern will send cold Pacific storms into the Carson City region Wednesday through early next week, a pattern that is more typical of early March rather than late May.

For Carson City and throughout western Nevada we can expect periods of rain and strong gusty winds and for the Sierra, heavy wet snow starting at around 8,000 feet and dropping to 6,000 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
