Attention singers! The Carson City Symphony Chorus will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, Oct. 31, for the December 10 Holiday Treat concert with the Carson City Symphony. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Choral Room in Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

Oh, wow, I just got a glance at the date. With the gorgeous weather planned for today, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is two months away. Let’s celebrate the holidays right in front of us first. The kids aren’t going to want to miss out on the Carson City Boo-nanza: trick or treating at the Community Center, crafts and activities at the Library, and Hotel Transylvania on the screen at the Aquatic Center. DJ Trivia is looking to expand their team of Trivia-masters: head to Red’s Old 395 tonight if you’d like to audition, or just play.

As Nevada Day 2017 approaches, it seems more important than ever to celebrate the importance of community, the goodness that exists in our state, and renew a sense of pride in our home.

Under the direction of Richard Doede, the Capital City Community Band will open its fortieth concert season with a Free “Tribute to the American Red Cross”, Saturday, October 28th following the parade from 2:00-3:00pm at the Amphitheater in the Legislative Mall, Carson City, Nevada for Nevada Day.

Air quality around our area is fairly poor, due to the multiple fires in Northern California, so indoor activities are recommended for anyone having a hard time with the smoke. Luckily, Carson City has just the ticket. Get your jazz on at Living the Good Life; Cherie Shipley is hosting tonight’s jam. Kick up your heels during country line dance lessons at the Eleventh Frame Lounge inside Carson Lanes. You’ll learn something new every Tuesday and Wednesday night. The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1976, presents Gerry O’Connor and Richard Mandel on Saturday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. in the Maizie Harris Jesse Black Box Theater. This Saturday will begin the 4th season of the very popular Celtic Series and for the first time, you can purchase a season ticket to ensure that you don’t miss a show.

Street Vibrations is a celebration of all things motorcycle, but today the only cycle that truly matters is the three-wheeled one that belongs to Glen Lucky. A lot of towns have local celebrities; most everyone has seen Glen Lucky on the side of the road, pushing his bike to take him further. Today, the Nevada State Museum invites everyone to help Lucky celebrate his 65th birthday, complete with cake and a huge group photo.

Ready to head back to school, Carson City? The entire community is invited to attend the Open House Open Hearts Community Fair at Carson High School this evening. You’ll be treated to performances from our talented students, yummy treats created by the CHS Culinary students, and a plethora of information from community services like the library and Boys and Girls Club. Wheeled Food Wednesdays at the Brewery Arts Center is contingent on nice weather, so it’s too early to tell if the rain clouds will cooperate.

The Brewery Arts Center will wrap up an unforgettable season of free concerts under the stars in Carson City this Saturday with the Young Dubliners and traditional Celtic band Cíana.

In the blink of an eye, a three-day weekend will be here. No need to wait for the Best of the West Rib Cook-off, though – bar-be-que is already on the menu in Sparks’ Victorian Square. The award-winning ribs served up by Carson City BBQ are among the 22 entries for the 29th annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off that begins this Wednesday, Aug. 30 and runs through Monday, Sept. 4 at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks.

I’m really hoping for rain. Unfortunately, rain brings thunder and lightning with it, and we are already suffering the effects of lightning. In the final concert of the 2017 Dangberg Summer Festival, Sacramento area band, Todd Morgan and the Emblems, will bring 50s, 60s and Rockabilly style music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 pm, Thursday, August 31.

THURSDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

Actor and Carson City native Grant Davis made his return to the Nevada state capital Tuesday for the screening and premier of "Something Like Summer," a film musical in which has a starring role.

The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has buddied up with something new this year. Today and tomorrow, the Jukebox International Film Festival features fifteen contestants competing in four categories. Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada Musical Theater alum, Grant Davis, is back in town to show support for ‘Something Like Summer,’ the Australian musical he stars in. Make sure you’re in McFadden Plaza around 5 p.m. Davis will be performing songs from the movie and music from his debut album on the Third Street Stage.

I’m sending good thoughts to those in the California fire zones: with as bad as the smoke is here, I can only imagine how bad their eyes burn. The weekend is inching closer, and bringing with it one of Carson City’s favorite events – The Taste of Downtown. The annual fundraiser for the Advocates to End Domestic Violence brings everyone downtown for samplings from our local restaurants, live music, and a good time had by all. A free Western Heritage Celebration returns to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 22, beginning at 11:00 am.

The event’s second year will include a heritage quilting presentation, a Victorian dressing presentation, songs about local history and cowboy poetry, as well as gold panning and other children’s activities.

The Carson City Senior Center presents the 20th annual Senior Follies this weekend at the Bob Boldrick theater, with shows Friday evening at 7 p.m. and matinee performances Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.

First a little background. One of my grandfathers started a mortuary in Hardin, Montana just over a hundred years ago. It is still run by family, currently one of my cousins. My father had many occupations, including being a mortician.
