Chamber singers hold concerts in Carson City, Reno

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with concerts in Carson City on November 2 and in Reno on November 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke.

The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.

Performance auditions this weekend include Polar Express, 'A Christmas Chaos'

Aspiring young actors have two audition opportunities in Carson City and one in South Lake Tahoe beginning this weekend.

Carson City goes full-board live music with Jazz and Beyond Music Festival in August

The summer sizzles as the Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses and jazz lovers proudly present the 2012 "Jazz & Beyond" Carson City Music Festival, an annual event that began in August 2004. Performances at multiple venues in Carson City will feature more than 100 musicians in over 50 bands, Aug. 3-19 and are mainly free. Music styles include Dixieland jazz, big band, bluegrass, Latin, blues and folk.

Last chance to see funny musical 'Forever Plaid' in Carson City

You've got one more chance to see "Forever Plaid," a musical trip through time with a quartet of the same name. Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall in Carson City is closing night for this very musical comedy about four men who died in a car crash on their way to their first public performance as Forever Plaid.
Starring is this look back at music of the 1950s-1960s are a quartet of singers and comics — Marshall Brodeur (the sort of MC), Leoney Berg, James McDuffie and Corey B. Stockton. The show is directed by Stuart Ross. And he has done a fine job.

WNC Concert Choir, DHS Madrigal Singers usher in the Christmas season

The spirit of Christmas will be celebrated with a holiday concert featuring the Western Nevada College concert choir and the Douglas High School Madrigal Singers Tuesday.
The choirs, directed by musician and DHS band director Bill Zabelsky, will feature a myriad of fine music including "The Snow Carol," "All on a Cold Winter's Night," Earlene Rentz's "Agnus Dei," and a Mac Huff arrangement of the popular "Home for Christmas.

Polar Express Carson City Train Sold Out; 7,500 tickets purchased

Six weeks after tickets went on sale, The Polar Express™ has officially sold out, according to the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
More than 7,500 riders will board the magical holiday train on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, the only officially licensed Polar Express event in the region this holiday season.

Director of Carson Chamber Singers to retire

Judy Monson, founder and director of the Carson Chamber Singers since 1985, has announced her decision to retire in June 2012 after the Pops Party concert. A well known and loved educator, vocalist, and conductor in Carson City and Reno, Ms. Monson has led the Chamber Singers in inspiring performances in Carson City, Reno, Virginia City, Minden, Genoa, and Fallon.

Concerts on tap in Carson City

The Carson City Symphony will play Saturday April 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carson Community Center with a program of "Dances and Romances" featuring guest harpist Marina Roznitovsky. Sounds like a concert not to be missed.

Roznitovsky will join the symphony for Saint-Saens' Morceau de Concert for Harp and Orchestra. Conducting will be David Bugli. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors, students and Symphony Association members. Those 16 and under are admitted free.

Sneak preview of 'White Christmas' at Carson Community Center

Yep, I got to the Carson Community Center a 7:30 p.m. Friday night, ready to enjoy the Western Nevada musical "White Christmas." Big show, big cast, great music.

But the audience didn't show up. No one but me, except for Stephanie Arrigotti, producer and director and her cast of thousands.I then realized the the WNMCC opens its shows on Saturdays rather then Fridays.

So what, I was there, the orchestra was warming up, the actors were on stage, the house lights were dimmed and there were plenty of seats, so I sat to enjoy a private preview, the dress rehearsal.

Big weekend in Carson City for jazz fans

Jazz Carson City 2010 will wind up this weekend with a Friday night appetizer followed by a Saturday and Sunday blowout.

It’s all under the umbrella of the Mile High Jazz Band, which offers a five-singer tribute to Count Basie Saturday night from 8 to 10 p.m. at the 3rd Street site.
