Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. Heading into Tuesday, activities and events lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered, a Relay for Life fundraiser at Firehouse Subs, a regular meeting of the Carson City School Board, the Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show at its Brewery Arts Center gallery, Carson Victory Rollers present a new skater program, plus classes at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt with millions of caches hidden worldwide; in fact, there are hundreds of them hidden right here in Carson City. This Saturday, Feb. 29, join the Park Rangers on an interactive adventure searching for three caches hidden within Riverview Park.

The first European to see America, so far as we know, was a Norseman named Barney, somewhere around A.D. 986. Barney was wading ashore, holding his shoes, when he encountered some Native Americans who were not in a good humor that particular morning, and they gave Barney the bum's rush. So he absquatulated (cut stick) in his dinghy, and rowed like crazy for home, anywhere but America.

Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City. in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail.

Ride will normally consist of two loops which are 10-15 miles long each. The ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but will usually be about a 12-16 mph pace.

Happenings around the capital city Thursday include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, the launch of Thursday trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike at Linear Ditch, plus Soroptimist International of Carson City hosts "Celebrating Women Helping Women" at the Carson Nugget. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is having a Cottonwood Wrapping volunteer event! We will be installing mesh wire around the base of Cottonwood trees to protect them from being damaged by beavers.

The Thursday, Feb. 20 hike is at Linear ditch, central near Fremont Elementary School. Meet on Cardinal Way off of Saliman Road.

Thursday hikes start at 3 p.m. and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required.

Hat and poles recommended If weather conditions are bad hikes will be cancelled.

The Feb. 18, Tuesday evening hike is at Linear Ditch Trail, West. Meet in the parking lot at Governor's Field on Evalyn Street off of Roop Street. Flashlight required.

Happenings around the capital city include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, Valentine-themed activities at Carson Mall, a Muscle Powered hike at Clear Creek Trail, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, the second of three Carson City school zone modification meetings and more.

With sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks, plus there's an assortment of meetings, club gatherings, art showings, a local school board meeting and more. At the end of the day, there's no better way to cap off the evening than by celebrating, with your sweetheart, music about love. That will be what's happening at Living the Good Life as Mile High Jazz Band and our celebrated vocalist Jakki Ford will do just that presenting "Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts." Read on for details.

The Carson City Trash Mob will set out Saturday, Feb. 15 to clean up the Ambrose Carson River Natural Area. Anyone is welcome to join in the effort, organized by Muscle Powered.

The Thursday, Feb. 13 hike is at the Clear Creek Trail, lower end. Meet at the trailhead for the Clear Creek trail, 1/2 mile west of Jacks Valley Elementary School on Jacks Valley Road, 1.8 miles west of Hwy 395.

The Tuesday, Feb. 11 event is at the Carson Tahoe Medical Loop/Wellness Mile. Meet in the parking lot opposite Pesti Lane on Medical Parkway. We will walk on Medical Parkway around the hospital, and on neighborhood sidewalks around the hospital. Flashlight required.

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host its February Full Moon Hike this Saturday on the South end of Prison Hill. The hike will be a glow stick adventure featuring the "Snow Moon," Ghost Rock and plenty of beautiful terrain.

Happy Saturday Carson City, and say hello to February! That means Spring must be right around the corner! I hope so at least, because Friday’s beautiful weather was enough to make me ready to say goodbye to father winter.
