Every time I think about that day, it brings tears to my eyes.

We lived in Kiev, Ukraine, about an hour away from Chernobyl, when it happened. I was 22, married, on maternity leave taking care of our 15-month-old son Danny. We knew about the accident that day, but were not sure how bad it was, and what it really meant for us.

It is Game On at Lake Almanor. How fast things can change with a break in the storms and a little sun. A week ago the fish were in a solid winter pattern and now the weather has them acting like spring.

North Platte, Nebraska is just west of the North Platte and South Platte rivers confluence forming the Platte. North Platte was formed in 1866 with the construction of the continental railroad. In 1941 the population was 12,000.

A couple of weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the women of North Platte heard a troop train with Nebraska National Guard troops would be passing through town. Several of the women decided to bake cookies to give to “our boys” when the train stopped for 10 minutes.

Former Nevada Governor and RNC Committeeman Bob List said late this afternoon that he is not ready to either privately or publicly endorse a candidate to replace soon-to-be departed state GOP chairman Mark Amodei until Governor Sandoval chimes in with his preferred choice.
“Governor Sandoval is the leader of the state party,” said List. “I will wait to hear who he thinks can best fill Chairman Amodei’s shoes before saying anything more on this matter.”

This may be one of the worst acts of senseless vandalism I've ever seen. Or, maybe someone really wanted a pair of shoes.

Winter is the time of year that seems to go on forever. Shorter daylight hours, cold temperatures and house-bound kids. And if you do go outside you wear so many clothes your knees won't bend.
What type of exercise would tempt you to brave the cold --- Sledding! Remember when you were young and fresh snow was an exciting part of your day? I’ll bet as you aged you lost sight of all that fun. Just imagine the calories you can burn when you force yourself to have fun with a sled!

I'm not sure I've seen a better close-up example of a campaign attack backfiring than I did last night in the Assembly District 40 race.

Robin Williamson seemed to be doing everything right to fill the seat held by fellow Democrat Bonnie Parnell. She was working very hard, walking the neighborhoods, working with both Democrats and Republicans to gather the coalition she needed to win in this GOP-leaning district.

And then the Nevada Democratic Party stepped in and screwed it up.

Carson City paramedics were called Wednesday to the Aquatic Facility on Roop Street after a child was pulled from the water and not breathing, authorities said.

Care Flight transported the 11-year-old boy from Carson-Tahoe Hospital to Renown Medical Center in Reno, according to Sheriff Ken Furlong. The child was taken by ambulance from the aquatic center to the hospital.

At the time the child arrived at the hospital he had a pulse and was breathing on his own, Furlong said.

A 5K walk/run will be held in Dayton on Saturday Oct. 23 to raise money for the Dayton Resource Bank. This “bank” is available to all students at our Dayton schools who are in need of resources that cannot be taken care of by their parents or the school.
The “bank” covers anything from class fees to school clothes and shoes. Referrals are accepted from third parties such as coaches, clergy, or school nurses, counselors, and teachers.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe will sponsor the 26th California Coastal Cleanup Day at Kings Beach State Recreation Area. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle and snack. Trash bags, recycling bags and gloves are provided. Volunteers who have work gloves are encouraged to bring them. Conservation-minded residents, students, family and friends are encouraged to join the annual cleanup along the banks of the Carson River, Brunswick Canyon and Prison Hill Recreation Area on Saturday as part of the 17th National Public Lands Day.

The FBI and the Carson City Sheriff's Office are working jointly on the investigation into Friday's robbery at the Mutual of Omaha Bank.

A job fair to fill 130 positions at the Carson City Kohl's store continues through Thursday at the Carson City Plaza Hotel Conference Room.

CARSON CITY – Nevada families with school-age children will spend $174 million for back-to-school supplies this month if spending trends track with national estimates, the Retail Association of Nevada reported today.

A 76-year-old Indian Hills woman, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, is missing and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in finding her. 
The woman, Ada Cordero, was reported missing by her daughter this Sunday afternoon and was last seen at 7:30 a.m. by her daughter, according to a press statement.

A Carson City man faces multiple felony charges after he was arrested without incident on June 18, following crimes allegedly committed on June 16.
Nyle Anthony Silva, 23, is being held on felony burglary, false imprisonment, and conspiracy charges; and misdemeanor battery and violation of bail conditions charges. Bail has been set at $79,000.

According to the arrest report, on June 18 at about 4 a.m. officers responded to the area of David Street and Stewart Avenue attempting to locate Silva, who was wanted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

A Carson City woman and a South Lake Tahoe man were arrested Thursday and face charges including indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and obstruction, after witnesses reported inappropriate behavior at Mills Park near the playground.
Lisa Maria Ferguson, 41, faces charges of gross misdemeanor indecent exposure and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. She is being held on $2,737 bail. Abel Perez Jr., 28, of South Lake Tahoe, faces disorderly conduct and obstruction charges. Both are misdemeanors. His bail was set at $744.

A Carson City couple face criminal charges of child endangerment after authorities found a baby crawling around in an apartment filled with trash, moldy food, pet and chinchilla excrement.
Katherine Denise Martin, 20 and Grant Austin, 21, each faces gross misdemeanor child neglect and endangerment charges after Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies made the May 28 discovery at the College Parkway apartment. Bail has been set at $2,500 each.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons announced yesterday he is pursuing an initiative petition to subject labor negotiations between unions and local government entities to the open meeting law to give taxpayers access to the discussions.
Some Republican lawmakers welcomed the idea, saying the Democrat-controlled Legislature has been unwilling to consider such a proposal.
