Carson City weather: Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning, extreme fire danger for region
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 09/15/2019 - 9:57amWith a strong cold front pushing into the region that will bring gusty winds and low humidity over the next two days, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for northern and western Nevada and Lake Tahoe region. Weather conditions will be especially dangerous along the 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth Lakes.
Fishing Report: several lakes dealing with toxic algae blooms, throw your lines elsewhere if possible

For anglers that fish Topaz Lake, you have until the end of the month to wet a line. As of October 1st, the lake will be closed until January 1, 2020. There is some speculation into next years fishing season.

Chautauqua of Hiram D. Scott at Dangberg Historic Park

Hiram Daniel Scott was a ship builder from Pittston, Maine by trade. Initially he settled in Santa Cruz, California in 1847, then followed the Gold Rush when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. There he operated a ferry business across the San Joaquin River.

Plumas County wildfire prompts smoke advisory for northern Nevada, Carson City region

Haze will likely remain in the valleys around the Reno metro area through the rest of the day.

The Walker Fire burning in northern California's Plumas County has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a dense smoke advisory for portions of northern and western Nevada, through 11 p.m. Sunday.
The advisory is for Lassen and Eastern Plumas counties, Eastern Sierra County, northern Washoe County, the Greater Reno area as well as Carson City and Carson Valley in Douglas County.

Runners gather for 8th anniversary of IHOP shooting for Memorial Run, Walk

Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, lost their lives in a senseless crime, when a man entered the Carson City IHOP and opened fire.
Now, eight years later, their memories are kept alive by their friends and family, and by the community they called home.

Thunderstorms bring lightning strikes around Carson City

As of Wednesday 8:20 p.m. the storms had moved out of the Carson City, Carson Valley area. More thunderstorms are expected Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
A quiet writer and keen coach, Rick Chandler made his mark
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 09/04/2019 - 1:15pmAfter the basketball team he coached was whistled for an unprecedented technical foul – a “provocative crossover” dribble – Rick Chandler blended two major parts of his professional life. He wrote a column about it.
Chandler was a well-known sportswriter and a highly successful coach. But he also was somewhat of an enigma. Parts of his life were a mystery to friends and peers other than that he was undeniably unassuming and altruistic. He was involved in many things that people didn’t know about for the simple reason that he rarely talked about himself.
Nevada Health Link’s new call center, website now live
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 09/04/2019 - 10:20amCARSON CITY — The Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, Nevada’s state agency that helps individuals obtain budget-appropriate health coverage through the online marketplace, Nevada Health Link, announces that starting Wednesday, consumers who previously purchased qualified health plans on HealthCare.gov can claim their migrated accounts on Nevada’s new state-based website, Nevada Health Link.
This is the first step enrollees should take to ensure their account is ready for open enrollment beginning on Nov. 1, 2019.
Carson Rifle and Pistol Club Hosts Rifle Match, Saturday, Sept. 7

The matches will consist of a "Mini Palma" (a 100 yard match suitable for most .22 rifles) and a Vintage Military Rifle Match. In the past three years the network has been involved with nearly 1,000 fires.

Low Medicaid rates force agency to cut day services for disabled in Carson City, Gardnerville
