The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.

The annual Silver Dollar Car Classic kicks off tonight with music and more before it moves on to its traditional place at Mills Park. With the waft of peppers, onion, tomato and cumin in the air, chili lovers, judges, cooks and volunteers began the 2015 High Sierra Regional Chili Cookoff on Saturday in Carson City with plenty of sizzle. The cookoff and tasting goes until 5 p.m. Saturday and will continue Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. The monthly Francis Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum features a slide-show and talk about various geothermal features around the world. This National High Five Day I’m throwing out a virtual high five to the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension for putting on this year’s Capital City Farm Days at Fuji Park. 4-H is alive and well in our region, and rightfully so. Agriculture is a huge part of what makes this state great. The program is geared toward school-children, but is open to the public today and tomorrow if you want to learn more about ranching and farming in our region.

It is now April. There is still hope for some late season storms, but the flowers blooming around town are ready for spring now. In this area, the weather seems to be whatever you aren't prepared for, so don’t put away those winter clothes just yet, and keep an eye on the weather report: a hard frost can undo the hard work you've put into your garden.

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

On this day in 1931 our state legalized gambling; what laws will they be making today? You can always head over to the Legislature building to sit in on a committee meeting or an Assembly session, eat in the café, or track down your representative to voice your opinion. But there is quite a bit more available in those halls.
