The Carson City Sheriff’s Office held its 2017 member recognition awards Wednesday honoring sworn employees, volunteers and civilians. Nominations were put forth by members of Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the selection committee was made up of last years winners.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reports a series of 32 very small earthquakes since Nov. 28 in the vicinity of North McCarran and Highway 395. The largest of the earthquake cluster was felt early Saturday, 2:02 a.m. with a magnitude of 1.9.

Dog Town Canine Rescue will host a Holiday Boutique Booth this weekend at the Carson Mall. The booth will be there Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9-10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department has sent one engine staffed with 4 personnel to the Thomas Fire burning out of control in southern California, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. Engines from East Fork, Central Lyon County and Tahoe Douglas are among 12 regional agencies that make up three strike teams that are sending personnel to the fire.

Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.

The rumors of Santa Claus coming to town are true. The jolly old man is making several appearances today, and is feeling photogenic. Take a ride with him at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, join him on the ‘Elf Crawl’ from the Capitol to the Carson Mall, or tell him your wish list at Debug Computers. Adults have a hard choice to make: the monthly downtown wine walk and the Holiday with a Hero Pub Crawl both take place today, and I’m not sure I’d recommend attempting both.

Once the turkey has been devoured, all thoughts turn toward shopping. Shop Small Saturday helps to throw a spotlight on our local gems, and the great gifts you’ll find. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District christened Marine 24 earlier this month, giving Lake Tahoe its first year-round firefighting boat. At a cost of nearly $500,000, the vessel is able to fight fires from on board as well as piping water from the lake into water tenders.

UPDATE: Bruce's Legacy, the underwater search and recovery team from Wisconsin, was at Fallen Leaf Lake recently, searching the water for a missing person. What they found was more than expected when bodies of both a man and woman were recovered.

We’ve got a wine walk weekend coming our way, come rain, snow, or shine. This one could get a little blustery; there’s a storm moving in. I’m just grateful that Mother Nature waited until after the parade and trick-or-treat night to send us some winter.

It’s easy to get excited about Halloween as it approaches. October is filled with pumpkin stuff, haunted houses, and plenty of parties. But here in the capital city, we have Nevada Day to anticipate, as well: a day filled with hot air balloons, parade floats, music, competitions, and plenty of Battle Born fun. While you’re waiting for the three-day weekend, go enjoy Monday. Football, swing dancing, and karaoke are all on the menu.

The Nevada State Honor Guard as well as the Las Vegas Firefighters Local 1285 Pipe and Drum Corps opened services Saturday morning at the Nevada State Firefighters Memorial in Mills Park to honor two Las Vegas area firefighters who died in the line of duty last year.

The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. A new Basic Life Services program is taking to the streets, Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said, improving emergency medical services in the community and easing the stress currently placed on existing ambulance units.

Some weekends are pretty cut and dry, just a few things to choose among. This, however, is not one of those weekends. High-flying, death-defying action takes over the Minden Airport as the Aviation Roundup Air Show takes to the skies. Pasta-lovers won’t want to miss the Eldorado Great Italian Festival in downtown Reno. Carson City’s monthly Downtown Wine Walk gets a dose of nostalgia as the Western Airstream Convention sets up shop and welcomes the curious.

Plaques bearing the names of two Las Vegas area firefighters who died last year in the line of duty will be added at the Nevada Firefighters' Memorial in Carson City on Oct. 14.

One might think that the end of summer means that the fun times are over: they would be wrong. This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

A local charity is doing its part to help displaced victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma in storm-ravaged parts of the southeast.

UPDATE: Airmen from the 152nd Airlift Wing of the Nevada National Guard departed Monday morning for Fort Lauderdale, Florida to provide communications support for Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. UPDATE: 2:45PM: An inmate was taken by Care Flight for a stab wound following a fight at the Correction Center yard at Warm Springs, according to Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Brooke Keast. The injury was non-life threatening. A second inmate was shot with pellets and did not suffer serious injuries and was not transported. No corrections officers were injured.

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department was called Friday morning to the Warm Springs Correctional Center off of Fifth Street for an incident involving an inmate that was reportedly shot with pellets. Care Flight air ambulances have been ordered.

Agencies across Carson City are teaming up to create a safer community for youth throughout the area.
“The goal is to help teach kids how to be more safe in certain circumstances,” said Lindsay Chichester, extension educator with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. “It’s stuff they will face every day. Ultimately, it could prevent a death.”

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents a free Safety Day event for children and their families. The event, held in partnership with local businesses, organizations and agencies, is 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 9, at Mills Park, 111 E. William St. in Carson City.
