Graham's Word: Reno City Council Needs To Think Very Carefully About Losing The Aces

Event Date:
December 1, 2012 (All day)

The City of Reno seems to be dropping the ball when it comes to adhering to their side of the agreement with the owners of the Reno Aces.

In a letter dated November 28th 2012 written to the Mayor of Reno Robert Cashell from the President of Triple-A Baseball Branch E. Rickey, President Rickey tells a damning story of what Reno has failed to do to. This letter has given permission to the owners of the Aces to relocate if the City of Reno fails to come to an agreement on a refinancing deal for Aces Ballpark.

Graham Blog: WNC Athletics is Carson City's Best Secret that Shouldn't Be

It is time that Carson City gets behind their college’s athletic programs. Western Nevada College has had athletics since 2005. They have had rodeo, women’s soccer, women’s softball, and perhaps the cornerstone of the entire athletics, the men’s baseball. All of these teams have amped up the enrollment of Western Nevada College and yet, the athletics continue to struggle financially because of the lack of local support.

Some Nevada Welfare Recipients Have Fun on Taxpayer Dime But Most Spending Appropriate

CARSON CITY – There are a few withdrawals in vacation destinations like New Orleans and Hawaii. There are a few from such tourist locations as Angel Stadium in Anaheim, SeaWorld San Diego and Pier 39 in San Francisco.

There are about 1,600 withdrawals in more than 35 states and the territory of Guam. And there are about 100 withdrawals at liquor stores and quite a few at Nevada casinos or slot parlors.

Movie Review: Brad Pitt may not hit a homer in 'Moneyball,' but at least it is a triple

The baseball-computer film "Moneyball" now playing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is the story of how computer analysis came to baseball through the then lowly Oakland A's. Brad Pitt is Billy Beane, general manager of the A's and a one-time hot prospect for baseball fame but who stuck out.

Aces lose 5-2 after night of celebration

RENO- A night after celebration, the Aces looked to be suffering 'post-celebration' effects. They came out against the Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday night lethargic but the game stayed close. The Aces' starter RHP Kevin Mulvey went 5 innings giving up 5 hits (one of those a homerun) 3 runs with 5 strikeouts and no walks allowed.

PLAYOFF BOUND!: Reno Aces defeat Fresno Grizzlies 5-2

RENO- Aces are one win away from punching their first ticket ever into the Pacific Coast League Playoffs. The Fresno Grizzlies come into town for a four game series. With Reno having a seven game lead over second place Tacoma and only eight games left to play, the Aces have all but wrapped up their spot in the playoffs. All it would take is an Aces win or a Tacoma loss.

Well, it happened, the Aces beat the Grizzles 5-2 on Monday night for their first ever playoff berth.

Showdown in Reno: Aces and Rainiers fight for division/playoffs

RENO- Aces Ballpark a beautiful sight for downtown Reno was full of electricity on Saturday night as the Tacoma Rainiers rolled into town for the most important season series for the two teams. The Aces lead the Rainiers by five and a half games in the Pacific North Division as they start the four game series against the Rainiers.

The 'Voice of the Aces' Ryan Radtke started out his broadcast by saying the emotions of the two teams would be at an all-time high knowing what this series means for the both of them.

Nugget Project: Meet the developer (updated)

The developer chosen for the Carson Nugget Redevelopment Project will be on hand tonight to answer questions about the project.

Rick Oshinski, CEO of Sacramento-based P3 Development, will appear before the Carson Nugget Development Advisory Committee tonight in the Community Center's Sierra Room.

Carson Now plans to show live video of the meeting, as well as hosting a discussion forum.

Many questions are sure to arise, concerning the details on the project and its scope, as well as the developer and how the company was chosen.

As I've been talking to people about this project, I've collected a number of questions, that I put together below.

Nugget project: developer and consultant have history of public projects

Today's Nevada Appeal has a story about how a developer has been selected for the Carson Nugget downtown redevelopment project.

The story mentioned that the developer, P3 Development, built the $64 million Stockton Events Center while Mark Lewis was that city's manager.

But that understates the ties between Lewis and the developer. Looking at the projects listed on P3's website, a large part of their work seems to stem from the City of Stockton, and happened during Lewis' tenure.

Carson High grad umpires behind the plate at Aces Ballpark

RENO – Every chance is a stepping stone to Nate White's ultimate goal – becoming a Major League Baseball umpire.
So when White, a 2003 Carson High graduate, received the chance to umpire behind the plate in Tuesday night's exhibition game between the Reno Aces and the University of Nevada at Aces Ballpark, White jumped at the opportunity. But White wasn't wide eyed at all as he conducted himself like he belonged.

Editorial: Nugget Project: No new answers. Only more questions.

Editorial by Dave Morgan

An article in the Nevada Appeal this morning attempts to get new information from the Nugget Project’s “go to guy,” Steve Neighbors. Neighbors, who is now the owner of the Nugget, is quoted as saying that the project still lacks a developer to shoulder the “private industry” half of the project. That’s about all that’s new from Neighbors, that they STILL don’t have a private partner.

Comment on Project manager of financially troubled Reno Aces Ballpark project now helping to guide Carson City-Nugget project by Dave Morgan

Another thing. It is redevelopment guru’s like Mark Lewis who create a contagion that “patience is longer a virtue.” Why wait for sluggish evolution to produce what we want? We want it NOW!

Right you are. You provoked a thought in me earlier today after I read your last contribution.

When I stated “it is possibly not a deal breaker” I meant that even if the incubator was excluded from the final project, the project may still be viable for the reasons stated.

The citizens committee’s “reason for being” as outlined in a recent Board of Supervisors agenda packet indicates that the committee is to assist the forward momentum of the project.

The incubator could be an issue for the reasons stated, however, it is possibly not a deal breaker.

I am somewhat troubled by the tenor of this article. Elected officials are always looking for a scapegoat. It seems the comments by Councilwoman Zadra is the ultimate in 20-20 hindsight.
