Lyon commissioners ban marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas of county

Medical marijuana dispensaries will not be allowed in unincorporated areas of Lyon County, commissioners decided Thursday.

In a 4 to 1 vote, the board approved the ordinance that outlaws dispensaries, laboratories and grow operations in the mostly rural county. The ordinance was proposed by Sheriff Allen Veil and brought forward by Commissioner Virgil Arellano.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing is picking up with the cooler temperatures and hoppers are on the hillsides above Angel.

However, anglers are still reporting a few slow days here.

Forest Service to lift fire restrictions in Lake Tahoe Basin

Fire restrictions will be lifted Tuesday for national forest land in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the U.S. Forest Service announced.

“The arrival of cooler, wetter weather brings safer conditions and has allowed us to lift restrictions on Forest Service managed lands,” said Forest Service fire chief Kit Bailey. “Even though restrictions will be lifted, we still need hikers and campers to use caution with campfires, stoves, barbecue grills and cigarette smoking.”

Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake trout season opens Oct. 1

This is an annual reminder that nearby Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30-35 miles north of Reno-Sparks, will open on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.

That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 01 to September 30. Here are all kinds of interesting information about that lake:

Grants of $11.9 million approved go to Lyon County for septic tank project near Dayton

Lyon County has been awarded $11.9 million in grant and loan funds through USDA Rural Development Nevada to build a waste water collection system for nearly 500 users who are currently on septic tanks near Dayton. The project aims to reduce nitrate problems.

The second Free Fishing Day in 2013 in California will be Saturday, Sept. 7. The first was way back on Saturday, July 6.

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Nevada Public Utilities Commission names Carolyn Tanner as general counsel

Carolyn “Lina” Tanner has been named general counsel of the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada. She will be based in the PUCN’s Carson City office.

Tanner began her new duties effective Aug. 12. She replaces former PUCN General Counsel Jan Cohen, who retired earlier in August.

The general counsel division is responsible for representing the commission’s interests in all proceedings in state and federal court and before state and federal regulatory agencies.

Carson Now has removed this letter due to several questions about its authenticity and that Mr. Javanovich doesn't appear to have ever been a resident of Carson City. Carson Now has asked Mr. Javanovich a second time for authenticity of the letter in which we have not had a reply. If Mr. Javanovich steps forward with legal documents saying who he is, including a Nevada driver's license or state ID card, we will put the letter back online.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

July 6 is one of two Free Fishing Days in California

California has two Free Fishing Days in 2013 which are close to holidays. The first Free Fishing Day in 2013 is today, July 06 (associated with the Fourth of July) and the second is on September 07 (associated with Labor Day).

So, on Saturday, July 6, you will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Ward-only voting Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed legislation Tuesday that would have changed Reno’s and Sparks’ current voting system from citywide voting to ward-only voting, which would require voters to select the city council candidate who would represent the ward they live in.
