Outdoors with Don Q: 2015 fishing season opens Saturday at some Lyon County waters

This is an annual reminder for fishing in nearby waters: Saturday, February 14 is the opening day of the 2015 fishing seasons for the following waters in Lyon County:

Douglas County Emergency Management received notification from State Emergency Management officials that the flash floods events in July and August 2014 did not qualify for state or federal assistance.

Outdoors with Don Q: Davis Lake, Calif. annual ice fishing derby on Feb. 7

An annual ice fishing derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Davis Lake, Calif., with an entry fee of $20 per person. The only uncertainty is whether it will be an ice fishing or a water fishing derby.

It is normally an ice fishing derby at this time of the year, but last year and again this year, it is shaping up to be a water fishing derby due to lack of ice on the lake.

WNC offers new Spring driver education classes

New Driver Education courses for teens age 15 and older will be offered by Western Nevada College throughout the spring. Each session includes four days of instruction, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost: $100.

Three classes will meet on the WNC Carson City Campus Saturdays, Feb. 21-March 14, Monday-Thursday, April 6-9 (Carson High School spring break) and Saturdays, April 18-May 9.

Topaz Lake to open to fishing on New Years Day

Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2015 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Thursday, Jan. 1.

If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hangover, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Bundle up though because daytime temperatures in the area are not expected break 30 degrees.

Heller Foundation gives $235,000 to League to Save Lake Tahoe

The Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation has granted the League to Save Lake Tahoe $35,000 to support its land-use planning program, which ensures strong environmental regulation surrounding development at Lake Tahoe. The foundation has also bolstered its named endowment at the League with a $200,000 donation.

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra area fishing report

Hello fellow anglers. Now that our evening daylight is getting shorter, take advantage of as much fishing time you can get. On the bright side, on Dec. 22, the days will start getting longer by 1 minute each day. Also remember that you have until Saturday, Nov. 15, to get in your last bit of fishing on the California rivers and streams as the season will come to a close.

There will be some areas on the Carson River and the American River that is open to fishing all year long with restrictions of zero limit and a barbless hook. Check your regulations for these areas.

Medical marijuana provisional approvals announced

The Division of Public and Behavioral Health on Monday notified medical marijuana establishment applicants of the results of the Division’s rigorous evaluation process to determine provisional certification to operate a medical marijuana cultivation, dispensary, laboratory, or production establishment.

In Carson City, two dispensaries, Nevada Organix LLC and one not named, received provisional license approval. See the full list here. Go here for provisional licenses for marijuana cultivation facilities, where there are seven in Carson City. Four Carson City applicants received license approvals for production facilities. There were no applicants in Carson City for independent testing laboratories.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, is offering a free workshop Nov. 13 to train people throughout the state how to properly handle and use pesticides. The workshop is meant for certified applicators and people who regularly handle pesticides as part of their jobs, such as farmers, ranchers, park employees and groundskeepers.

Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake trout season opens Oct. 1

This is a reminder that Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30-35 miles north of Reno-Sparks, will open on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout. That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Reducing the amount of Nevada small business closures is the goal of a new monthly workshop designed to educate business owners on how to assess their venture prior to licensing and launch. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, about half of all new establishments survive five years or more and about one-third survive 10 years or more.

WNC Offers Fall and Winter Driver Education Courses in Carson City and Douglas County

CARSON CITY – New Driver Education courses for teens age 15 and older will be offered at Western Nevada College this fall and over the winter break. All courses are $100. Each session includes four days of instruction, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Two courses will meet on the WNC Carson City Campus on Saturdays, Sept. 20-Oct. 18, or Oct. 18-Nov. 15 (no class Nov. 1, Nevada Day Weekend). A winter break class will be offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, Dec. 29, 30, 31 and Jan. 2. The Carson City classes include four hours on a driving simulator.
