Pyramid Lake trout season opens October 1

Pyramid Lake, located about 30 miles north of Sparks, will open on Monday, Oct. 1, to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be on Sept. 8. The other Free Fishing Day was way back on July 7. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license on Saturday.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

Study Touts New Measures For Teacher Effectiveness

CARSON CITY – As Nevada policy makers work to ensure that ineffective teachers are removed from classrooms around the state, a new report released today provides evidence to support the use of test scores to measure how much individual teachers contribute to pupil achievement.

Alpine County's Heenan Lake opens Friday for fishing

This is a reminder that a special trout fishing season will open on the Friday before Labor Day.
August 31, 2012 is the Opening Day of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing season at Heenan Lake in nearby Alpine County, Calif.
Each year, that season opens the Friday before Labor Day and closes the last Sunday in October (October 28 this year). If you’re interested and if you would like to enjoy a totally different fishing experience, plan to spend August 31 at that easy-to-get-to location.

Rep. Amodei Says Any Green Energy Policy That Pushes Utility Rates Higher Wrong For Nevada

CARSON CITY – Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., said today that any “green energy” policy that leads to higher electric bills for Nevadans who are looking for work in tough economic times is the wrong energy policy for the state.

“Nobody is anti-green,” he said. “We struggle to compete with the cost of a kilowatt hour when we talk about economic development. And economic development has something to do with jobs.”

Nevada Among States With Lowest Energy Consumption Per Capita, Gets C+ For Renewable Energy Efforts

CARSON CITY – Nevada ranks 40th among the states for the amount of energy consumed per person, according to the nonprofit website EnergyTrends.org.

The state rankings were released on Wednesday and show Nevadans consumed 239 million Btu per capita in 2010 compared to 303 Btu per capita in 2007.

Fire restrictions begin Monday in the Lake Tahoe Basin

Fire restrictions will go into effect in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday July 9. A Forest Order has been issued to provide for public safety through the end of the official 2012 fire season.
Campfires, including charcoal barbecues, are prohibited except in exempted recreation sites. Smoking on National Forest land is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within an exempted recreation site. Fire restrictions are intended to reduce the possibility of human-caused wildfires over the summer season. (see PDF below.)

Outdoors with Don Q: The Fourth of July will be different this year

If you have not yet made any plans to be in the Great Outdoors for the upcoming Fourth of July, you might want to heed some or all of the following tips.
Because the Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week on Wednesday this year, it will put a crimp in many folks’ plans for celebrating in the outdoors, as many of them will only have Wednesday off as a holiday.
So, their celebrating will have to occur either on the preceding weekend or the weekend following the Fourth.

With that said, consider this for either weekend:

Pyramid Lake cutthroat trout season closes on June 30

This is an annual reminder that Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, will close on Saturday, June 30 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 01 to September 30.
On October 01, it will re-open for the 2012-2013 cutthroat fishing season.

Winners in Free Fishing Day poster contest

When it comes to the Free Fishing Day Poster Contest, an annual art contest for the Silver State's fourth and fifth graders sponsored by the Nevada Department of Wildlife, this round definitely goes to the girls.

Selected from 363 entries, this year’s winners were all young ladies.
The top spot went to fifth grader Stacey Horton from French Ford Middle School in Winnemucca.

The two runners-up were sent in by Gabriella Perkins, fifth grader from Bud Beasley Elementary in Sparks, and Josephine Payan, fourth grader from Mark Twain Elementary in Carson City.

Don Q's Fishing Report for week of June 6

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fish are active and conditions are perfect.
The surface temps are averaging 59 degrees, and climbing to 61.5 degrees by midday. Clarity is very good, to 13.5 ft. Still cool enough on the surface to still be holding some nice Kings on the west side. 2 salmon were caught trolling Almanor West up to 2 lbs.
Trolling has been more effective than bait fishing deep holes and should remain that way until surface temps really spike. Like above 65 degrees.

Draw a great big red circle around the date of Saturday, June 9 on your calendar and then plan to have a fun-filled day in the Great Outdoors.
June 09 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2012.

On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and not need a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp.
