Thursday, Sept. 28: Things to do in Carson City

There’s more than one way to travel in Nevada, and our railways are the topic at both of Carson City’s museums. Learn about the Glenbrook Steam Engine’s history and what it took to get her back on track at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Steven Drew will lecture on the railroads of Lake Tahoe at the Nevada State Museum tonight. Get in the Street Vibrations mood at Battle Born Harley. A concert featuring Justin Lee, in addition to bikes and brews, will kick off their celebration. Families will want to attend the outdoor movie in McFadden Plaza.

Street Vibrations is a celebration of all things motorcycle, but today the only cycle that truly matters is the three-wheeled one that belongs to Glen Lucky. A lot of towns have local celebrities; most everyone has seen Glen Lucky on the side of the road, pushing his bike to take him further. Today, the Nevada State Museum invites everyone to help Lucky celebrate his 65th birthday, complete with cake and a huge group photo.

Fall motorcycle riding has never been better and will be even more so this week as the Battle Born Harley Davidson 2017 Street Vibrations Fall Rally begins this Wednesday and runs through Sunday in Carson City.

By the end of the week we will enjoy the brief return of warm sunny days and hear the roar of the many bikes in town for the annual Street Vibrations Fall Rally. Learn about Tibetan Astrology from him this evening at the Brewery Arts Center. Most every tavern in town will have their television tuned to Monday Night Football. Unforgettable and exciting, this is how the Carson High School Homecoming celebration week began. Students enjoyed all the fun and festivities that began at 1 p.m. last Friday as every student in the school hustled to the big gym to prepare for and celebrate everything from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to the upcoming crowning of the 2017 Homecoming Queen and King.

Boys & Girl's Club director named Afterschool Ambassador for Washington policymaking efforts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Matt Sampson, director of operations for Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada in Carson City, was one of 15 Afterschool Ambassadors appointed by The Afterschool Alliance, a non-profit public awareness and advocacy organization dedicated to increasing the availability of afterschool programs for children.

Several of the stops will be hosting musicians, in addition to vino.

The 14th Annual Jazz and Beyond Music Festival opens tonight with a Garden Party at the historic Bliss Mansion across from the Governor’s Mansion. Bring a picnic and enjoy an art show, great live music and tours of the mansion.

It won’t be lions, and tigers, and bears taking over Fuji Park; the Carson City Fair is more about bunnies, alpacas, pigs and chickens. It begins today with a 4-H dog show focusing on obedience and rally. You’ll have to wait until Wednesday for the carnival, but you’ll be rewarded for your patience with one dollar rides opening night, courtesy of Carson City Toyota. If you happened to be awake during the wee hours of the morning, you may have heard some thunder rattling about – there may be a little more of that on its way.

JDRF of Northern Nevada One Walk

JDRF of Northern Nevada will be holding its annual One Walk on Sunday, September 24, 2017, to raise awareness and funding for the local chapter.
Each year, nearly 3,000 people ascend on the University of Nevada campus to rally for JDRF's mission to turn "type one into type none."

Carson City Fair seeks volunteers to staff July 24-30 events at Fuji Park

Organizers of the Carson City Fair are seeking volunteers to help with a variety of duties.
“We have lots of positions available,” said Lindsay Chichester, chairwoman of the Carson City Fair Board. “We have everything from helping with the youth livestock show to assisting the judging of the static exhibits.”
