Nevada celebrates Sesquicentennial with August event lineup

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 15 through Aug. 31.

House passes Nevada Congressman Amodei's Pyramid Lake bill

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei’s bill known as Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act, by a bipartisan voice vote.

The bill, H.R. 3716, would ratify an agreement between the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and Fish Springs Ranch to resolve a dispute over water rights near Reno. It is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed into law.

UNR hosts scientific gathering to track socio-environmental systems in mountain regions

An ancient forest of mature pine trees, standing upright under 100 feet of water in a small lake in the Lake Tahoe Basin, helps scientists as they study how changing climate can affect mountain environments and the communities in them. The trees, discovered and studied by a University of Nevada, Reno, researcher, are remnants of a 200-year-long medieval drought.

The site is a stop on one of the field trips of a four-day international conference on mountain observatories held at the University of Nevada, Reno July 16-19.

Deadline is July 11 for registration to Fremont Symposium at Nevada State Museum

When much of the West was still part of Mexico, John C. Fremont made his way across unmapped territory leaving a lasting mark wherever he went.

Naming the Great Basin and Pyramid Lake, Humboldt, Carson, and Walker rivers, and peaks and valleys in between, the explorer from South Carolina set out to give the land a new identity. Exploring the territory that included Nevada, California, Oregon and more, he mapped the West for the rest of the world.

The two-day series of lectures and presentations July 25-26 will examine how the famed explorer changed the face of America, the tools he used and the topographical and political lessons learned along the way.

Gusty winds prompt Red Flag Warning for much of Western Nevada

A Red Flag Warning has been issued from noon to 8 p.m. Monday for much of western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service. Low pressure over the Pacific northwest will bring gusty winds and dry conditions to Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties Monday.

Winds will gust to 30 to 40 mph. These winds along with low humidity will create critical fire weather conditions for parts of western Nevada, mainly south of I-80.

Mountain ecosystems scientists convene at UNR to discuss social ecology issues

The allure of pine forests, majestic granite peaks and rushing rivers has always drawn mankind to mountaintops. The same intrigue drives the work of scientists around the world, many of whom will convene at the University of Nevada, Reno for a multi-day conference on social, biological and environmental systems in mountain regions, especially important as climate and land-use changes affect mountain environments and the communities in them.

Strong winds move into the region ahead of storm

A storm moving into the region will bring strong winds to the Sierra, Carson City and western Nevada areas today and overnight into Wednesday, with up to 18 inches of snow expected near the Sierra crest, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Wind gusts today and tonight will approach 45 mph in valley locations with stronger gusts in wind prone areas. Ridge gusts will approach 80 mph.

Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing in March

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.

Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can easily run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!
The lake is the terminus of the Truckee River which begins at Lake Tahoe.
