Lake Tahoe water clarity in 2014 the best in more than a decade

Clarity levels at Lake Tahoe in 2014 showed the biggest improvements in more than a decade, according to researchers Tuesday at the University of California, Davis, who have studied the lake for the last half century.

The improvements are in part due to continuous work from the Lake Tahoe community to lower pollutants to the lake. They were also influenced by the drought, as reduced precipitation meant fewer contaminants flowed into Lake Tahoe, particularly during the summer, when clarity levels were the highest recorded since 2002.

Continuing a winning tradition, UNR concrete canoe team takes regionals

Continuing a winning tradition that began in 2006, the University of Nevada, Reno concrete canoe team won the regional qualifying event and is heading to the National Concrete Canoe Championship races for the 10th time in a row, to defend the school’s national championship title won last year.

The team dominated the seven northern California teams in the five race categories, paddling their 138-pound canoe, Aquatone, to win each of the races at the Mid-Pacific Regional Competition at Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif. Friday, April 3.

Suspect in vehicle chase from Carson City to Reno now in custody

A man suspected of eluding Carson City sheriff’s deputies in a Feb. 25 vehicle pursuit that began in Carson City but was called off for safety reasons after it was well into the Reno area, has been arrested, police said.

Arrested was Scott Hermens, 34. He was taken into custody at Walmart off Damonte Ranch Parkway in south Reno and faces multiple charges, including a felony eluding charge issued out of Carson City for the late night vehicle chase, said Carson City Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Humphrey.

Carson City sheriff’s weekend log: felony arrests made for vehicle theft, assault

A Carson City man was arrested Friday, 10:30 a.m. on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle after a brief vehicle pursuit with officers, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested was Adrian Garcia Montez, 21, of Carson City. Bail has been set at $25,000. According to the booking report, deputies were dispatched to a call of an occupied stolen vehicle that was being followed by the victim.

Two detained after vehicle pursuit north of Carson City

A vehicle pursuit that began in Carson City this morning has ended two suspects detained.
The pursuit began in Carson City after 10 a.m. and went north into Washoe Valley before the suspect vehicle turned around at Davis Creek Park and headed south back toward Carson City. The vehicle was stopped near Lakeview on I-580 Freeway, according to police scanner traffic.

Carson City sheriff's weekend arrests: Man tasered after vehicle, foot chase

A 31-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Saturday in the area of Robinson and Valley streets on suspicion of felony eluding after a vehicle and foot pursuit with officers, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Randy Paul Warstler also faces five misdemeanor charges including obstructing an officer, driving with a revoked license, suspended registration, having no proof on insurance and violation of a suspended sentence. He was arrested at 3:52 a.m.

Carson City arrest log: Woman jailed on three felony counts after foot pursuit with officers

A 27-year-old Carson City woman, wanted on a felony warrant, was arrested early Sunday after giving officers the name of her roommate and then running from them early Sunday morning in the area of William and Rand streets, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Kayla Lynn Olson was caught near Long Street and Wendy Lane at 1:12 a.m. after having jumped over fences in a foot pursuit with deputies, according to the arrest report. The woman was contacted after having crossed William Street with two others.

Two in custody, two patrol vehicles damaged after brief pursuit

Two are in custody this Monday afternoon after a brief pursuit that ended when a vehicle crashed into two Carson City sheriff's patrol vehicles.

The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. with the suspects being arrested at the intersection of Molly and Millennium streets in a housing complex located off of East Long Street. None of the officers were injured. A taser was deployed after one of the suspects attempted to flee.

Carson City patrol deputies pursue vehicle to Reno, one in custody

Carson City sheriff's deputies were involved in a pursuit late this morning on I-580 from Carson City to Reno, with the Nevada Highway Patrol intercepting the vehicle at South Meadows Parkway in Reno.

According to dispatch, the vehicle, occupied by one person, was involved in a dispute with someone in Carson City.

Man arrested on misdemeanor charges after eluding officer in pursuit

A Carson City man was jailed Monday on four misdemeanor charges including eluding an officer after he was clocked on radar going more than 70 mph in a 45 mph zone and driving through a stop light, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a motorcycle patrol officer doing traffic enforcement in the 5000 block of Carson Street recorded the 34-year-old driver going 73 mph. The officer pulled behind the truck and activated his motorcycle lights and siren.

Mark Twain Elementary lockdown lifted after juveniles run from officers

UPDATE 1:30PM: The second juvenile who ran from sheriff's deputies this morning has been located. Officers are meeting with him and his parents, according to dispatch. He had led officers on a foot pursuit that went through neighborhoods, over fences and through backyards, and briefly led to a lock down at Mark Twain Elementary after the teenager was seen running through the school.

Authorities were called earlier to a business on Long Street after two juveniles were harassing owners and customers. When officers attempted to make contact with the juveniles, they ran.

Woman jailed on DUI, resisting charges after driving pickup into a building

A 53-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday on four misdemeanor charges, including DUI, destruction of private property, driving on a suspended license and resisting arrest after she drove her vehicle into a building, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The incident happened in the 3300 block of Highway 50 East at 10:41 a.m. Officers arrived and found the woman had driven a white Toyota pickup into the north side of a business. The vehicle was running and still in drive gear, with the engine revving at a high rpm, according to the arrest report.

Man in custody after robbery on Highway 50 East

UPDATE: The Carson City Sheriff's Office has identified the man arrested for a burglary and chase this morning as Nicholas Stockwell, 22, of Carson City. He faces charges of Class B felony attempted burglary and misdemeanor charges of property damage and resisting a police officer.

Woman arrested after Highway 395 chase with NHP that went from Carson City to California

A police chase that began Tuesday morning on Highway 395 and Eastlake in Carson City ended near Bordertown in California north of the state line with the arrest of a Reno woman, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Melanie Marnne-Lawson, 53, was arrested after the vehicle pursuit, which began at around 9:30 a.m. and reached speeds in excess of 85 mph along Highway 395, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson. The chase began after a hit and run accident happened on Highway 395 and Eastlake in Carson City where a dark green Dodge pickup truck had rear ended another vehicle and fled the scene.

Man arrested by Carson City deputies on felony burglary, stolen property charges

A 59-year-old man suspected of burglary was arrested Wednesday and admitted to the crimes, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said. Charles Roy Dickey, whose address is listed as homeless, was jailed on three felony charges, including burglary, possession of stolen property and a failure to appear warrant issued in March out of Clark County District Court.

Carson City man jailed after brief vehicle pursuit with officers

A 19-year-old Carson City man was jailed on multiple misdemeanor charges after allegedly using his vehicle in a reckless manner and refusing an order to pull over, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

According to the arrest report, officers standing next to three patrol cars on Pine Street observed the man, driving a red 1987 Ford Mustang, accelerate and rapidly approach the Hot Springs intersection.

Suspect in Washoe Valley killings recently released from prison, tied to Arizona murder

Washoe County authorities have identified the man suspected of killing two women in Washoe Valley and say he may have also killed an Arizona man days after he was released from prison.

Anthony Gustave Nelson, 40, who had been released from prison in Arizona on June 2 for sexual assault, is the suspect in the deaths of two women, ages 68 and 70, and who led authorities on a chase from Carson City to Sand Mountain Recreation Area on Friday, June 13 in which he died in a shootout with deputies.

UPDATE: 11:10PM: Two women were found dead Friday night in a Washoe Valley home while the suspect was killed in a shootout after a high speed chase on Highway 50 that began in Carson City and ended at Sand Mountain Recreation Area in Churchill County. One man was shot and injured and is at Renown Medical Center in Reno, said Washoe County Sheriff's Office Detective Lt. Tom Green. His condition is unknown at this time.

The suspect is believed to have stolen a white Jeep Cherokee, which was registered to the residence, Green said. Inside the garage of the home was a pickup with Arizona license plates. Detectives are trying to determine if the pickup belonged to the suspect, said Green.

UPDATE 9:15 PM: The suspect in a Washoe Valley shooting earlier tonight is dead, confirmed Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong who was at the scene. No officers were hurt. Multiple agencies were involved in the pursuit, which began in Carson City on Highway 50 East and ended at a campground in the Sand Mountain Recreation Area. The campground was evacuated. At least eight Carson City sheriff's officers were involved in the pursuit.

Carson City man jailed on felony domestic battery charge; allegedly punched and choked wife

A 57-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of felony domestic battery after allegedly beating and choking his wife until she passed out, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy said. Gerald Richard Perschke was booked into Carson City Jail on $20,000 bail.
