A Carson City family trust wishes to trade the historic Pioneer Cemetery and a 19-acre hill site south and west of Ormsby Boulevard and Kings Canyon Road. The Potter Family Trust would receive the equivalent in city land if such a land trade were to happen.
As part of the process, Carson City leaders will decide when they meet Thursday whether to appoint Stephen R. Johnson and Associates as the indendent appraiser for the potential exchange.

The names of the four fatality crash victims in the horrific fatality crash involving three vehicles in Lyon County on US Highway 50 this past Tuesday morning have been released today.

The three victims traveling in the GMC pickup are as follows:

Driver: Troy Sibson, 47 of Fernley.

Passenger: Noel (Mike) Sotka, 52 of Fernley.

Passenger: Douglas (Jason) Counterman, 30 of Fernley.

All three men were employees of the Pioneer Crossing Casino properties based in Fernley and Dayton.

The Carson City School District will be holding a school board meeting on Tuesday, July 24 at 7 P.M. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center on 851 E. William Street.

The topics that will be discussed in this meeting are updates on Phase I School Bond Projects; such as parking lots, interior and building improvements at Fremont, Seeliger, and Mark Twain Elementary Schools, followed by proposed changes to the CCSD Policies.

Retiring teachers and staff of the Carson City School District were celebrated for their accomplishments during the Carson City School District Board meeting at the Community Center on Tuesday, May 22.

A total of 13 staff members from Carson City schools were granted a clock award by Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Jose Delfin. Most of the staff that received the awards had worked for the school district for at least a decade. George Rolin, a custodian of Fremont Elementary School for more than 20 years, expressed his gratefulness when he received his award.

I was busy some other place when "Star Wars, The Phantom Menace" opened in 1999 in the USA. Lucky me. Not so lucky now when I went to see the reworked original decked out in 3D. It's a corny movie and the 3D adds little to the viewing except for the $3 extra per ticket. At the Galaxy Fandango in Carson City you can see the release without 3D and you won't be missing much.

2011 Ends on a High Note…

The motion picture "Hugo," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a holiday movie that kids and adults can enjoy. Why all the fuss about Nevada's birthday on October 31? The battle lines were drawn between "traditionalists", and the "grinches" who would steal Nevada Day by calling for the last Friday of October to be the state's official holiday. The parade and other festivities would follow on Saturday; thus making for a three-day weekend for some Nevadans as well as state and local government employees. With the passage of AB396 by the 1997 legislature, Nevada voters, on November 3, 1998 advised the 1999 legislature they wanted to celebrate Nevada Day on the last Friday in October beginning in 2000. The legislature, after much heated debate, complied.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews may conduct prescribed fire operations on the south side of the intersection of Pioneer Trail and U.S. Highway 50 in the community of Meyers near South Lake Tahoe early next week if weather conditions permit, according to a news release.

The project is about 30 acres and consists of piles of vegetation and woody materials remaining after fuels reduction efforts aimed at reducing wildfire risk to the community.

The lecture is based on Ellison’s book, Long Beard: Warren Wasson, Nevada Pioneer, Indian Agent, U.S. Marshall, Inventor, and Enigma, published by Hot Springs Mountain Press, Minden, Nevada. A limited number of books are available through the Museum Store. Robert Ellison is a resident of Carson Valley, an area rich in history.

Lela Branstetter, a senior at Pioneer High School, is participating in the Miss Carson City Pageant this year. The pageant will be held on February 19, 2011. This pageant is a preliminary stage for the Miss America pageant system.

The Sierra Nevada Balletwill present the popular “Peanutcracker — The Story in Nut Shell” throughout the Carson City and Reno region this December.

Based on the Peter Tchaikovsky’s original ballet “The Nutcracker,” "Peanutcracker" is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet. Bena wrote and choreographed this traditional holiday show.

David is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor.
