TOCCATA Presents EPIC Concert Series Featuring Guest Violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn January 29-February 5

TOCCATA – Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus continues its 11th annual WinterFest with Elizabeth Pitcairn in Concert, performing with the legendary Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin.

The program opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s symphonic choral masterpiece Elijah, Part 2, featuring vocal soloists Anna Helwing, Joy Strotz, and Becky Earl, sopranos; Liudmila Mullin, mezzo soprano; Brad Perry and Sherman Modeste, tenor; and Stuart Duke, Chris Nelson and Chris Langton, baritones.

Reno Chamber Orchestra features Theodore Kuchar and James Winn

James Winn, professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and RCO principal pianist, performs his own Piano Concerto, written for the RCO over twenty years ago, as well as the Burleske by the young Richard Strauss. Maestro Theodore Kuchar also leads the Orchestra in a symphony by Mozart made famous in the film Amadeus, as well as the delightful “Classical” Symphony by Prokofiev.

Senator Square: Family night added to homecoming week activities

The tradition of homecoming continues at Carson High School the week of Sept. 21-26 with events every day for students and the community to participate. The newest event added to the week of homecoming will be the addition of a family night.

I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: August 29-30

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Final days for Jazz & Beyond Festival

The Jazz & Beyond - Carson City Music Festival concludes with nine events on Saturday, August 22, and four events on Sunday August 23.

Saturday events are:

Music in the Market – Barbara Baxter - 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Third & Curry St. Farmer's Market. Barbara Baxter sings soul-laced jazz with Jimmy Vermilion on piano.

Friday lineup: Carson City Jazz festival features Count Basie tribute among 3 venues

Jazz & Beyond, Carson City Music Festival, continues on today, Friday, with three free events. The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.

The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

I love August in Carson City and it’s because of Jazz and Beyond. Music everywhere. The Tahoe Ridge Winery is hosting Jazz Van Gogh, a guitar and flute duo. You’ll enjoy some time in the evening sun at the Comma Coffee Courtyard with Brent Johnson and The Call Up listening to some bluesy roots rock. You won’t want to miss Carl Sonny Leland at the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center. The boogie-woogie hall of famer will show you what fun can be had with a piano. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Lake Tahoe Summerfest Classic Concert series launches 2015 season with 'Passport to a World of Music'

Lake Tahoe SummerFest’s fourth season, “Passport to a World of Music,” will bring Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn to audiences July 31 – Aug. 16. The three weekend series of nine different concerts will transport attendees through masterpieces translated by renowned artists and a nationally acclaimed orchestra of 40 players.

Senator Square: Proficiency testing this week at Carson High School

Just a reminder that proficiency testing is this week at CHS. Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science. Senator Square: Carson High ski team hosts Warren Miller film 'No Turning Back' Dec. 12

The CHS Ski Team will be hosting the latest Warren Miller Film, “No Turning Back” on Dec. 12, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets can be purchased from any ski team member or from their advisor Adrienne Schneider.

Tickets are $8 for students and $12 for adults. They are also selling raffle tickets in conjunction with the movie. A multiple of prizes are available that evening at the showing of the film. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Doors open at 6 PM.
