TOCCATA – Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus continues its 11th annual WinterFest with Elizabeth Pitcairn in Concert, performing with the legendary Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin.

The program opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s symphonic choral masterpiece Elijah, Part 2, featuring vocal soloists Anna Helwing, Joy Strotz, and Becky Earl, sopranos; Liudmila Mullin, mezzo soprano; Brad Perry and Sherman Modeste, tenor; and Stuart Duke, Chris Nelson and Chris Langton, baritones.

James Winn, professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and RCO principal pianist, performs his own Piano Concerto, written for the RCO over twenty years ago, as well as the Burleske by the young Richard Strauss. Maestro Theodore Kuchar also leads the Orchestra in a symphony by Mozart made famous in the film Amadeus, as well as the delightful “Classical” Symphony by Prokofiev.

The tradition of homecoming continues at Carson High School the week of Sept. 21-26 with events every day for students and the community to participate. The newest event added to the week of homecoming will be the addition of a family night.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Jazz & Beyond, Carson City Music Festival, continues on today, Friday, with three free events. The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.

The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

I love August in Carson City and it’s because of Jazz and Beyond. Music everywhere. The Tahoe Ridge Winery is hosting Jazz Van Gogh, a guitar and flute duo. You’ll enjoy some time in the evening sun at the Comma Coffee Courtyard with Brent Johnson and The Call Up listening to some bluesy roots rock. You won’t want to miss Carl Sonny Leland at the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center. The boogie-woogie hall of famer will show you what fun can be had with a piano. To help launch the citywide music festival, Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] will host artists selling their art at the Bliss Mansion prior to the 7pm concert. The art sale will take place Friday, August 7 from 3-6:30pm on the porch, 608 Elizabeth Street, Carson City. The free events include art for sale, music, food, and a lovely home and garden to tour. The public is cordially invited.

Classical music of Spain and Hollywood’s most celebrated movie scores will highlight a weekend filled with Latin-fused flamenco and string symphony as world renowned guitarist Ana Vidović, opens and famed double bass player Jeremy McCoy closes the second weekend of Lake Tahoe SummerFest, Aug. 7-9 in Incline Village, Nev.

Boot stomping to bluegrass in a 1920’s boat house turned theater with Lake Tahoe in the background, kicking back at free concerts on a historic lakeshore estate’s grand lawn, and experiencing the Washoe tribe’s ceremonial dances and drumming are some of the many iconic experiences at Lake Tahoe’s Valhalla Arts, Music and Theatre Festival this July.

History will be made when Pablo Cruise and Ambrosia perform at Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project, Wednesday, July 8 at Cafe at Adele’s, as this is the first time both bands not only co-headline the event, but will play a set together, something both bands have long wanted to do.

Bikes, and cars, and brews: oh my! Downtown Carson is awash in activity on Saturday. Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly features the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, vendors, a brewfest, moustache competition and more. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.

Building on its June “Go for Baroque” kickoff series, TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra will continue its 21-concert Summer MusicFest with a series that celebrates the 10th Anniversary of Tahoe’s own Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Western Nevada College is making it easier to work toward a college degree and career skills. This summer, the college offers a variety of courses on campus and online, beginning Monday, June 8, through Saturday, Aug. 1.

A wide range of subjects will be available to students on the Carson City campus, including computer science, advanced mathematics, geology, biology, sign language, music, accounting, auto collision and composition, and more.

Lake Tahoe SummerFest’s fourth season, “Passport to a World of Music,” will bring Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn to audiences July 31 – Aug. 16. The three weekend series of nine different concerts will transport attendees through masterpieces translated by renowned artists and a nationally acclaimed orchestra of 40 players.

Just a reminder that proficiency testing is this week at CHS. Students taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 a.m., while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m. The following tests will be given on the assigned days — March 2: Math; March 3: Reading; March 4: Writing; and March 5: Science. Happy Friday, Carson City, the holidays are upon us in full force! Hanukkah has begun and Christmas is less than a week away. Time to get your last minute shopping finished and get those yummy smelling goodies in the oven. There are still some fun things happening around town, so grab the kids or a special someone and have yourself a holly, jolly time.

Conducting an orchestra is a feat all on its own. Imagine conducting an orchestra while playing the piano. That’s exactly what guest conductor Jeffrey Kahane will do during the Reno Philharmonic Association’s Classix Four concert set. Kahane performs and conducts Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466 from the keyboard during this fourth installment of the Reno Philharmonic’s Classix Series, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. and Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Multi-talented entertainer Larry Elliott will help members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club celebrate the holiday season at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Music Man Larry Elliott is an entertainer, singer, multi-instrumentalist, comedian and a professional actor. He's delighted audiences in person on stage all over the country from San Francisco and Los Angeles to New York, in addition is a regular on “Days of Our Lives” TV show and in the Oscar-nominated movie “The Cooler” among his credits.

The CHS Ski Team will be hosting the latest Warren Miller Film, “No Turning Back” on Dec. 12, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets can be purchased from any ski team member or from their advisor Adrienne Schneider.

Tickets are $8 for students and $12 for adults. They are also selling raffle tickets in conjunction with the movie. A multiple of prizes are available that evening at the showing of the film. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Doors open at 6 PM.
