Nevada moves toward shared parenting with new law
Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/26/2016 - 1:59pmNevada has moved from being among the worst states for shared parenting laws to being in the top third. Shared parenting is a flexible arrangement where children spend as close to equal time with each parent as possible after divorce or separation if both parents are fit. It has been shown to be highly beneficial to most children. The changes in the Nevada custody law were brought about by Nevada’s Parental Rights Protection Act of 2015.

Susan is an attractive, well-spoken, well educated, and independent thinking female — both as a wife, mother, and citizen of Carson City. The definition of who she really is lies in her upbringing, her education, her marriage, her children, and in her personal interests. All these components interact to make for a thoughtful woman with a definite mind of her own, yet one who wants the best for others involved in all of these relationships.

Column: Reflections of a former foster parent
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Mon, 05/02/2016 - 7:56pmI recently wrote an article about child welfare needs in Carson City. This included the shortage of foster homes here in the Nevada state capital.
My wife, Lisa, and I were foster-to-adopt parents through the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for a few years. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the need for people to step up and open their hearts and homes to foster children is critical.
But making a commitment as heavy as this requires preparation on multiple levels.
Awareness key to addressing child welfare needs in Carson City
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Thu, 04/28/2016 - 9:56pmImagine being awakened in the middle of the night by a stranger, escorted out into the chill of dark Nevada twilight, placed in a strange car, and driven to a strange house with more strangers who tell you everything is going to be all right.
To top it off, you are expected to go back to sleep in a strange bed.
Welcome to the world of a foster child, whose story is much the same whether it's told in Las Vegas or Battle Mountain, in Caliente or Carson City.

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 01/24/2016 - 6:33pmUPDATE: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Monday the murder investigation of Grant Watkins continues and there could be additional arrests.
"The investigation has well determined that a group of young men set out to rob Watkins of approximately 3 ounces of marijuana, and in the course of the event, Watkins was killed by gunfire along-side a neighborhood park," said Furlong. "In addition to the arrests, Detectives have executed search warrants at four residences and one rural environment, as well as the crime scene area. While the Sheriff’s Office believes that the core of the offenders has already been arrested, other arrests could come later as details of lateral involvement are made clear."

Being Well Carson City: A Resolution or a Revolution?
Submitted by editor on Tue, 01/05/2016 - 9:30pmI recently responded to some questions from Brett Fisher, an editor and writer for Carson Now about New Year’s resolutions for an article he was writing. It was a good article about the challenges we all face whenever we want to make changes in our lives.
Being Well Carson City: A Social Media Life
Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/21/2015 - 12:37pmI think the irony of the Ashley Madison hacking story is probably what prompted me to write this article about personal privacy. While a large number of people desire to keep their personal activities secret, it is amazing to compare the “small number of Ashley Madison users” to the enormous number of us who appear to be conducting much of our lives openly on the web through Facebook and many other sites.
Being Well Carson City: School
Submitted by editor on Fri, 08/28/2015 - 5:12pmThe sigh of relief by parents is almost palpable as the children head off to school last week and a return to routine and structure. As the little ones head off to kindergarten for their first day of school, parents watch with mixed feelings of pride, and the bittersweet recognition that he or she is no longer “little” but now more grown up than ever.

Being Well Carson City: Blend Gently
Submitted by editor on Tue, 02/10/2015 - 1:37pmI have written previously that my parents were divorced when I was 14. Following the announcement, Dad moved into the only hotel in our town which was above the bowling alley. I visited him there frequently in the evenings and on weekends although my mother had a cow, because the bowling alley was also a bar. His room was so small and cramped; you could barely turn around in it.

Column: I Accept …
Submitted by editor on Thu, 10/17/2013 - 9:29amIt isn’t that I was consciously aware of not liking myself during a period of my adolescence. I was simply angry, really angry. And I didn’t know what to do about it. “It” was several things actually. I turned into a tall skinny kid as I entered adolescence and got teased about being so skinny by peers, parents and others which made me terribly self-conscious. Then, my parents divorced when I was 14 which shook me to the core.

Column: Attention! May I Have Your Attention Please?
Submitted by newsroom on Fri, 08/02/2013 - 8:04amIn my opinion, a parent’s consistent and regular positive attention to and engagement with their child is the single most important aspect of the parent – child relationship. Nothing says “I love you” or “you are important to me” more than that one on one time. It is the cornerstone of attachment and bonding between the child and parent. That positive attention says to the child “you are safe and secure”, “I am here for you”, “I value you”.
