Northern Nevada Radio Control Open House & Air Show

The first Northern Nevada RC Air Show hosted by the High Sierra RC Club took place Saturday at the Pony Express Model Airpark.

Radio Control Clubs from all over Northern Nevada participated in the event The High Sierra RC Club, Reno Radio Control Club, Sierra Silent Soarers, Reno Sparks Control Liners Model Airplane Club and Sierra Sagebrush Flyers.

Brush fire extinguished in the Mark Way area of Carson City (UPDATED)

A small brush fire reported near the intersection of Goni Road and Arrowhead Drive actually turned out to be farther away, with the location being the intersection of Mark Way and Emerson, Carson City fire officials report tonight.
The roughly 20 foot by 20 foot fire, caused by wind that knocked tree branches into a power line which caused a spark, was extinguished shortly after crews arrived, said Dan Shirey, battalion chief in operations for the Carson City Fire Department.

Nevadans Now Being Notified Of Reactivation Of Extended Federal Jobless Benefits

CARSON CITY – Nevadans who are eligible to have their jobless benefits reactivated can expect letters by next week with instructions, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation (DETR) said today.
The agency began mailing letters Thursday to individuals whose Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) claims are being reinstated following action by Congress last week to extend federal unemployment benefits through November.

Weather Service issues afternoon Red Flag warning for Carson City and much of Northern Nevada

Gusty winds and low humidity expected for Carson City and much of Northern Nevada this afternoon has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Red Flag fire weather warning.
Low pressure expected through Saturday will bring increasing afternoon and evening winds that will produce very dry, fire-prone weather conditions, the weather service states.

Additional charges may be filed in Carson City burglary crime ring

More charges could soon be filed against a Carson City man believed to be involved in a burglary ring that spans over multiple Northern Nevada counties.
Bryan Allen Gaudette, 24, faces five additional felony counts of burglary and is being held in the Carson City Jail on $25,000 bond.
He is currently in custody for other items already recovered in the same case, authorities report.

Nevada State Museum staff designs grand prize for Carson City Mint Coin Show

WIth the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express this year, the Nevada State Museum staff designed a unique raffle prize to celebrate this year’s Carson City Mint Coin Show.

Raffle tickets are now on sale for the grand prize, a precious 20-ounce silver bar embedded with two one ounce .999 fine 150th Anniversary Pony Express medallions. Fabricated at Northwest Territorial Mint/Medallic Art and sponsored by John Etten of Heritage Collectibles, this unique, one-of-a-kind prize is valued at $1,500. The coin show is Aug. 27-28.

Local students win scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union

Sixteen Northern Nevada high school graduates were recently awarded $1000 scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union. Over 100 students applied for the program which the Credit Union has offered to local students for the past decade.

Nevada State Prison Closure To Wait For More Information, July Prison Board Meeting

CARSON CITY – A plan to close Nevada State Prison in phases over the next several months will be on hold for further consideration by the Board of Prison Commissioners next month, but Gov. Jim Gibbons said today that he will continue to authorize transfers of inmates for safety and security reasons.

Gibbons to defend prison closing

Gov. Jim Gibbons will defend his plan to close Nevada State Prison in Carson City at a Board of Prisons meeting tomorrow afternoon, saying that they do not expect to lay off any employees.

The governor's office has provided the following talking points to defend Gibbons' decision to close NSP, which were made available to Carson Now:

Efforts By Citizens To Access November Ballot End In Failure

CARSON CITY – One proposal sought to increase mining taxes and another wanted to define life as beginning at conception. A third would have required secret ballots for employee votes on whether to join a union and yet another would have given Nevada residents the right to reject participation in government backed health care.

Nevada commits to AT&T in $12 million contract for service upgrades

The state has signed a four-year $12 million contract with AT&T for telecommunications services, including private network, managed internet services and security, now making AT&T the primary communications provider in Northern Nevada.

First Day of the Annual Farmer’s Market at Mills Park in Carson City

Shoppers perused the fresh fruits and vegetables at the first farmers’ market of the season at the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park on Wednesday.

More than 20 vendors were on hand offering fresh produce, baked goods, crafts and flowers. For the first time in the market’s 16-year history, there are also vendors selling fresh meat and prepared foods like lumpias, wraps and sandwiches.

Carson Tahoe upgrades patient care at the Regional Medical Center

Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare (CTRH) announces several new upgrades that improve patient care and safety at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center (CTRMC). These developments include televisions in surgical waiting areas, an Emergency Department IT system complete with patient monitors, and emergency cots to prepare for crisis situations. These developments were made possible with help from the CTRH Auxiliary and Carson City Health and Human Services.

Initiative Petition Deadline Looms, Groups Have Until June 15 To Qualify Measures For November Ballot

CARSON CITY – While voters and political observers are focused on the Tuesday primary, Nevadans seeking access to the November ballot for measures they are pushing to amend the state Constitution have another key date in mind.
June 15 is the deadline for groups pushing their amendments to turn in the nearly 100,000 signatures they need to qualify the measures for the ballot. There are three initiative petitions to amend the state constitution still active, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
