First Day of the Annual Farmer’s Market at Mills Park in Carson City
Shoppers perused the fresh fruits and vegetables at the first farmers’ market of the season at the Pony Express Pavilion in Mills Park on Wednesday.
More than 20 vendors were on hand offering fresh produce, baked goods, crafts and flowers. For the first time in the market’s 16-year history, there are also vendors selling fresh meat and prepared foods like lumpias, wraps and sandwiches.
This year the farmer’s market offers a real treat for kids: Inflatable bounce houses. The majority of the vendors come from different locations throughout Northern Nevada and all the way to the coast of California.
The turnout was a little slow but should pick up as summer progresses, said Kim from Kim’s California Corner. “Next week will pick up because there will be more vendors and customers.” Kim’s California Corner offers a variety of olive oils and dipping sauces.
“The Farmer’s Market is to encourage locals to buy from local farms,” said Shirley Sponsler, founder of the annual Carson City Farmer’s Market. Shirley is the Produce Manager for the Sparks Farmer’s Market. She also puts on five other farmers markets besides one in Carson City. The Farmer’s Market has been in business since 1994. It originally took place on Curry Street and was moved to the Pavilion about 10 years ago.
“It’s going good," said Lindsey from Minton Family Farms. “The first day is always the slowest day.” Minton Family Farms has been a part of the Carson City Farmer’s Market for about 12 years.
The Farmer’s Market in Mills Park is every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., June 9 through August 25. Come check out what local farmers have to offer, you won’t be disappointed!
