Nevada State Archives brown bag lunch Tuesday features reading of 'Christmas in Nevada'

Author Patricia Cafferata will read from "Christmas in Nevada" on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City.

The delightful and touching stories tell how Nevadans have celebrated the holiday, from 1858 to the present day. All are welcome to attend.

Some of the more unusual accounts include the story of three miners trapped underground for forty-five days during the Christmas season, Tonopah’s “Nevergreen” tree, and Reno’s Santa Pub Crawl with thousands of costumed revelers.

Carson City's Project Empty Bowls features hot soups, holiday entertainment, auction and more

In its sixth year, Carson City has fought hunger during the holidays in a very unique way by serving delicious hot soups prepared by local restaurants that are dished up in ceramic bowls made by the hands of people in the community.

This Friday, the all-you-can-eat fundraiser returns, this time at the Carson Mall, with an array of holiday entertainment, an auction, raffle and more to go along with delicious, savory and soothing hot soup delights.

The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. inside the Carson Mall's north entrance.

According to West, the damage to the interior was so severe from years of misuse and decay, that the only parts to remain of the original establishment will be the exterior stone walls and cast iron columns.

Nevada authors gather for book signing at state museum in Carson City

UNR scientists find causes of 'firenado' in deadly northern California Carr Fire

RENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.

The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.

Carson City weather: Overnight snow could impact Wednesday morning commute

UPDATE 5:13PM: Slick road conditions and multiple spinouts are being reported by the Nevada Highway Patrol during the Tuesday evening commute. The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down and take extra caution when driving. The snow is expected to end before the morning commute, but roads may remain slippery. The weather service Winter Weather Advisory was activated late this afternoon due to snow arriving earlier than expected.

Suspect linked to 20 vehicle burglaries over Thanksgiving in jail, Carson City Sheriff's Office says

Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives have linked a series of crimes, including robbery, burglary and auto burglaries over Thanksgiving week that originally began Nov. 18 in the Goni Canyon area of North Carson City, a sheriff's office captain said.

Carson City emergency crews called to crash at Spooner junction at Highway 50 and 395

UPDATE 4:38PM: Two people were injured in the Monday afternoon crash at Spooner Junction, with one person flown by Care Flight and the other taken by ground ambulance to the trauma ward at Renown Medical Center.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded late Monday afternoon to a vehicle accident in the area of Spooner Junction, Highway 50 and Highway 395, South Carson Street.
