Successful conservation effort keeps Tahoe Yellow Cress off endangered species list
Submitted by editor on Wed, 10/07/2015 - 10:46amSuccessful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide Wednesday that Tahoe yellow cress, a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the popular lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Fall prescribed fire program to begin in Lake Tahoe Basin

The 21-year old U.S. Forest Service firefighter died Saturday fighting a lightning-caused fire south of Echo Summit. Known by friends and family as Mikey, Hallenbeck was a Sierra-at-Tahoe employee for the past two seasons and a local firefighter.
Forest Service firefighter dies after being struck by tree near Lake Tahoe

This new Community Wildfire Protection Plan was collaboratively developed by the 18 member organizations of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team and is the culmination of a three-year planning effort.
State warns drone users to keep their aircraft grounded during Nevada wildfires

State damage assessment teams review flooding in Johnson Lane, Stephanie Way areas

The State Damage Assessment Teams came out to the affected areas Thursday to determine the amount of damage to public infrastructure as well as attempting to determine private property damage following state and FEMA damage assessment criteria. Douglas County hopes to have this report completed as soon as possible.

The Johnson Lane Firehouse Station 6 is being utilized as the local field office for citizens to report damage that has occurred in this incident.
Carson City contracts with consultant to inventory trees as part of management plan

Ten acres, with about 30 burn piles, will be burned over the next two days. Signs will be posted on Joy Lake Road and the junction of Joy Lake Road and Mount Rose Highway.

Bob Roper to lead Nevada Division of Forestry beginning in February
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/02/2014 - 2:37pmFirefighter turned administrator Bob Roper has been named Nevada's new Division of Forestry leader, the director of the state's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced Tuesday. He starts the job Feb. 2, 2015.
Roper, now the chairman of the International Association of Fire Chief’s Wildland Fire Policy Committee, was Fire Chief for Ventura County, Calif., for 15 years prior to his retirement in 2012. He worked his way up through the county organization beginning in 1980 as a firefighter.
Living With Fire program introduces new group to help reduce wildfire threat

There were 80 Nevadans from 10 counties in attendance representing many stakeholders in Nevada’s wildland-urban interface fire issue, including members of wildfire-prone communities; local fire service representatives; local, state and federal agencies; and landscape partners.

UPDATE: 6:40: Fire crews and aircraft have halted the forward advancement of a wildland fire Wednesday night off Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County. Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Nevada Division of Forestry, and local fire districts, including East Fork, Tahoe Douglas, Lake Valley, and South Lake Tahoe responded to the Kingsbury Fire.
