Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Rockabilly Riot car show, Dayton Valley Days, a pancreatic cancer awareness walk at Silver Oak Golf Course, the annual Pooch Plunge at the Carson Aquatic Facility, horse endurance races in Virginia City, history talks at Mormon Station Park and much more!

The Nevada Department of Corrections is asking the public's assistance in locating a minimum security inmate who walked away Sunday from the Stewart Conservation Camp on Snyder Avenue in south Carson City.

Effective Saturday, the Carson City Fire Department is implementing fire restrictions on city and privately owned lands within Carson City.

Vegetation in western Nevada has dried out significantly. A large crop of grass and brush is evident at lower elevations and trees and other forest vegetation at higher elevations are quickly drying out. The public is encouraged to safely enjoy the public lands, bearing in mind that human-caused fires annually threaten human life, private property and public land resources every summer.

UPDATE 7:10PM From Lyon County Manager Jeff Page: The fire burning in Lyon County near Stagecoach is approximately 400 acres. No structure were threatened and no injuries reported. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5:57PM: The Bureau of Land Management has taken over incident command of the fire near Stagecoach in Lyon County that started Sunday afternoon, according to emergency scanner traffic. As of last report, the fire was between 400 to 500 acres. KOLO reports the fire is 20 to 25 percent contained.

UPDATE 4:55PM: A wildfire that started Sunday afternoon in the Stagecoach area has burned between 400 to 500 acres as of late Sunday afternoon, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page. No structures are threatened at this time, according to the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District. Nevada Division of Forestry crews are on scene with help from Storey County. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Sunday afternoon to a brush fire in the area of Walmart and Home Depot.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is once again coordinating the collaborative efforts of federal, state and local fire services; public safety agencies; community organizations; and others to participate in Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month throughout May.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has stepped up its efforts to educate communities about the threats posed by invasive plants, animals, and microorganisms in Nevada during National Invasive Species Awareness Week, now through March 3, 2019.

The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is excited to announce the new addition of an advanced rescue hoist system, which will aid in emergency response and life-saving rescue efforts primarily for injured wildland firefighters.

Autumn has arrived. With it comes the promise of cooler temperatures and, hopefully, some moisture.

But don't let Summer's exit fool you into thinking we are leaving wildfire season behind, too. Across the Great Basin, wildfire has no season.

With dense vegetation spanning over 300 acres, the iconic Spooner Lake portion of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is increasingly susceptible to environmental disturbances threatening the health of the Tahoe Basin. State officials from forestry, parks and lands announced Thursday the closure of the Spooner Lake portion of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park from Sept. 12 to Nov. 16 to address forest health issues.

UPDATE 9:48PM: Carson City Fire Department has released some fire engines from the brush fire that started at a compost pile at the Stewart prison camp.

In the fourth fire call of the day, Carson City Fire Department responded Tuesday night to a brush fire at the Stewart Conservation prison area on Snyder Avenue.

UPDATE TUESDAY 9AM: According to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon, investigators determined the Rifle Range fire was started by target shooting. It burned a total of 218 acres. Crews will continue to work throughout today suppressing hot spots and reinforcing containment lines. Full containment is expected by 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

CCFD acknowledges the Nevada Division of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management - Nevada for assisting with the fire and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and East Fork Fire Protection District for mutual aid in covering CCFD stations during the fire.

UPDATE 7:27PM: The Rifle Range fire is 50 percent contained with forward progress stopped. Carson City Fire Department will be releasing some fire crews this evening. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

A Washoe County jury on Friday found the Nevada Division of Forestry guilty of gross negligence in the Little Valley Fire that burned down 23 homes in 2016.

UPDATE 5:42PM: Old Highway 395 is now open in both directions after a wildfire closed the highway from Eastlake to Bellevue, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

UPDATE: 5:20PM: Forward progress stopped on Washoe Valley "Berry Fire."

The 8-acre fire is now 30 percent contained according to Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

Evacuations are still in place for remaining addresses.

Crews will remain on site overnight "mopping up." Some Carson City Fire Department crews are being released from the scene. The cause is under investigation.

5:00PM: Good progress on the Berry Fire is reported by Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. Firefighters are working to secure utilities. The evacuation area has been reduced to 8 addresses. The Galena Evacuation Center is now closed.

Old US 395 between Bellevue and Eastlake Drive closed for approximately 1 hour.

Washoe Valley outages have yet to be fixed. Original estimated time of restoration was 5:30PM, however the fire could prolong the restoration.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

I’m finding pretty white moths sitting on our patio. They are about one inch long with black and white-striped legs and a black spot on their heads. I wondered if I was seeing the invasive White Satin Moth, Leucoma salicis.

CARSON CITY — A total of 16 soldiers aboard two Nevada Army Guard helicopters are set to begin firefighting efforts Monday while based out of Lampson Field Airport in Lakeport, Calif.

A day after a real fire was successfully battled in the Jacks Valley area in Douglas County, firefighters from Carson City Fire Department and East Fork Fire Protection District are participating in training exercises in the 300 block of South Nevada Street.

UPDATE: The James Loop Fire was mapped at 260 acres. The fire was caused by heavy equipment working on a new home under construction, according to a joint news release from Douglas County, East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE 4:43PM: From Douglas County Sheriff's Office via Twitter: Firefighters are making good progress on the James Fire to the north and east side flanks with two helicopters dropping water and 1 fixed wing air tanker dropping retardant. Firefighters continue battling active fire on the west side. Two hand crews have arrived and more coming.

UPDATE 413PM: In a fire that exploded fast threatening homes in the James Canyon area north of Genoa, firefighters have been able to save up to 30 structures thus far that are threatened by the James Fire that started Monday afternoon. Two helicopters, 1 air tanker and more than 100 firefighters continue to battle the blaze. There's no word yet on containment but Douglas County officials say the fire remains at around 50 acres as of 4 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday afternoon to a fully engulfed vehicle fire that was spreading in the area of an east Carson City vehicle salvage yard.

The morning after the Fourth of July one year, a dog showed up at our back door; a shaking, frightened and forlorn black labrador.

Effective July 4, 2018, the Carson City Fire Department is implementing fire restrictions on city and privately owned lands within Carson City. Vegetation in western Nevada has dried out significantly.

In the mountains east of Lake Tahoe, visitors may notice some aspen trees have been defoliated due to an influx of invasive white satin moths.

UPDATE MONDAY 1:35PM: The Evans Fire saw no growth overnight and remains at 63 acres and is now 50 percent contained, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release. Firefighters will continue to mop up and improve the line around the fire Monday afternoon. Helicopters will continue to be used to address smokes within the fire area.

UPDATE 3:22PM: Both lanes of Highway 50 through Dayton are now open, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Firefighters are mopping up the area.

UPDATE 3:08PM: Forward progress on the fire in Dayton has stopped, according to Central Lyon County Fire Protection District. The fire burned approximately 10 acres entirely on Dayton State Park property, said the CLCFPD battalion chief. The fire and investigation is now under the command of Nevada Division of Forestry.

UPDATE 2:45PM: An update to the fire at the rifle range Tuesday afternoon. Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon reports progress made on the fire and is now moving into mop-up phase. There are three hand crews, two engines, 1 rescue ambulance and overhead staff on scene. The fire is between 4 to 5 acres. Helicopter air support was not needed.
The cause is unknown at this time and is under investigation. The rifle range remains closed for the day.

UPDATE 2:18PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said there was a flareup this afternoon that takes the fire out of mop-up phase. A hand crew from the Nevada Division of Forestry has been called to the scene. There has been some talk of air support from firefighting helicopters.
