Kingsbury Grade reopened, firefighters make significant progress on wildfire

UPDATE: 6:40: Fire crews and aircraft have halted the forward advancement of a wildland fire Wednesday night off Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County. Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Nevada Division of Forestry, and local fire districts, including East Fork, Tahoe Douglas, Lake Valley, and South Lake Tahoe responded to the Kingsbury Fire.
The fire’s size was estimated to be as large as six acres at one point, but it has been downgraded to 1.5 acres, said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Gabor.
Crew are constructing fire line and have deployed fire hose around the fire. Due to the progress in suppressing the fire, all aircraft except one helicopter have been released.
The helicopter is dropping water on the fire. The fire is located in the canyon below the Ridge Resort on Tramway Drive near the top of Kingsbury Grade about 4 miles in. While structure protection crews were deployed as a precaution, there is no threat to residences or other structures.

UPDATE 4:47PM: Reverse 911 has been activated for the Upper Kingsbury area homeowners, occupants and businesses of the fire, still said to be around 6 acres and growing. No evacuations have been made at this time. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office wants the public to stay out of the area and advises that residents should be prepared to evacuate.

UPDATE 4PM: Helicopters, air tankers and fire agencies from around the region are responding this Wednesday afternoon to the growing wildland fire burning through dense brush and trees in a remote area on the valley side of Kingsbury Grade.
There have been no homes evacuated but residents on both the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe sides are being told to prepare to evacuate if conditions move flames toward structures. Douglas County Sheriff's Office says there are structures threatened in the bottom of the grade near Foothill Road. If the fire moves west over the ridge, homes in Daggett pass area could be threatened.

UPDATE: Kingsbury Grade is closed due to the fire on the valley side half way up State Route 207. The staging area is the Boulder parking lot at Heavenly Mountain Resort, according to dispatch. The fire has grown to more than 5 acres with moderate rate of spread.

Firefighters in Douglas County have been called to Kingsbury Grade for a wildland fire burning on the valley side of Kingsbury Grade.
Smoke from the fire, which was reported at around 1:30 p.m., is visible from Carson City. The fire appears to be growing. East Fork Fire has asked Carson City firefighters for mutual aid assistance, according to dispatch.
State Route 207 remains open on the lake side of Kingsbury as of 2:27 p.m. The strength and direction the fire is moving unknown at this time.
Fire personnel are attempting to access the fire. At this time no road closures have been made, but the possibility is high that Kingsbury will be closed, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks.
It is unknown what started the fire started.
