A Navy veteran who told Bernie Sanders that he wanted to kill himself because of his struggle with Huntington’s disease and overwhelming medical bills returned to a Carson City campaign rally three months after they first met to thank the Democratic presidential contender.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! The Carson City National Night Out event held in August has been awarded third in the nation among communities with a population of 50,000 to 100,000. Significantly, Carson City was the only Nevada jurisdiction to receive an award this year.

With family activities making up the Christmas tree lighting at the capitol on Friday night, Saturday night is reserved for grownups who are invited to take a festive walk through downtown Carson City and make stops and their favorite restaurants and bars as part of a community fundraiser for local schoolchildren who are without permanent homes.

The last Thursday of November means a big gobble gobble, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy in the games, festivities, activities at home and outdoors. Events are at a minimum, for obvious reasons, but the two big ones are traditions for us in the capital city. Heading into its 16th year of giving Carson City schoolchildren living without permanent homes a Christmas for themselves and their family, Holiday with a Hero is upon us and so is the need for the community's financial support.

CARSON CITY — Sierra Lutheran High School and Fellowship of Christian Athletes are partnering to cultivate support for Trees For the Troops, a local effort to generate funds to gift Christmas trees to active military at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, Calif.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin the sale of Christmas tree permits on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019. Permits cost $10 each payable by cash, check or credit card. Please note, cash sales are quicker and allow for more efficient payment processing.

The Carson City School District would like to share special thanks to Dolan Auto Group for donating $5,000 to Fremont Elementary School’s Comprehensive Life Skills class. The money was awarded as part of a community benefit program the dealership hosts each year.

Activities around the capital city Tuesday include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Carson City Republican Women's Club luncheon honoring our veterans, a kindergarten open house at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, a safety presentation for older adults presented by Carson City TRIAD; fitness and swing classes at Yaple's Ballroom, Art Night Out at the Carson City Library and more.

The Carson City Republican Women's Club is grateful for veterans and it will honor them at its upcoming meeting Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Casino Fandango Ballroom.

CARSON CITY — The opportunity to take a great photograph at the Nevada State Railroad Museum doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down.

As Veteran's Day appears, we should all thank those who have and are currently serving our country. Our military has kept our nation as safe as possible and have put their lives in danger for us and our posterity.

Every day that passes is a day that we should celebrate for a safer and more welcoming time. Show respect for our veterans and for those who are currently serving.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11 with a number of events happening around the capital city and Northern Nevada which began this week and will continue through Tuesday.

Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. Carson City students are recognizing and honoring military men and women this week with Veteran’s Day displays and events. Veterans from all branches of military service, as well as families of students, have been encouraged to attend events Thursday, Friday and Tuesday. Campus visitors should check in at the front office at each school site.

The Carson City Army Recruiting Station is proud to welcome two of our newest Future Soldiers, Alissa Lucas and Taylor Clark. Alissa Lucas is currently a Senior at Carson High School and a member of the Junior ROTC.

She chose to attend training to be Military Police and will leave after high school graduation. Taylor Clark is from Gardnerville and a 2019 graduate of Douglas High School. She chose to become an Intelligence Analyst and leaves for Basic Training in November. Congratulations to you both for making the decision to serve our country!

CARSON CITY — This month’s convoy of vintage military vehicles that traveled though Nevada on U.S. Highway 50 was in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy.

Daughters of the American Revolution, Battle Born Chapter, and Fort Churchill Society, Children of the American Revolution, celebrated Constitution Week on September 15, 2019 with a gathering featuring guest speaker Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury, whose topic “Rascals and Rebels: Uprisings that Sparked America” described the struggles that changed history.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City will open its doors for free to all Museum Day ticketholders this Saturday, Sept. 21 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day.

Museum Day is a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.

Aviation Legend Clay Lacy takes time out from the Reno Air Races to visit a life long friend George Byard. Lacy and Byard met in the mid 50s while Byard worked for Gulf Stream. Friday they got to meet and tell old stories. Both men have spent their lives expanding aviation.
