Jacqueline Milagros Acosta-Bruno was born Nov. 17, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., to Claudia Bruno and Hector Acosta. She has four younger brothers and sisters, all attending Carson City Schools, as well as a sibling just 18-months-old.

With the new year, a new set of laws is once again taking effect.

Of the hundreds of bills the Legislature passed in 2019, nine finally became effective either in whole or in part on Friday with the start of the new year and as the next legislative session is set to begin in February.

The National Hockey League (NHL) will be holding two outdoor games in Lake Tahoe next month as part of their Outdoor Weekend series.

On Feb. 20, Nevada's own Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche will face off for a live game hosted by Edgewood Tahoe Resort.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

This has been a very hard year for all of us in Carson City, and the world in general. I think we can all agree we're happy to see this one pass by, and are looking forward to welcoming in the New Year. Especially with the knowledge that vaccines are right on the horizon for the public, we only have a little while left before things can return to normal (hopefully).

Finally! That’s the word now heard on almost every newscast as we wrap up this tumultuous year. It’s the thought that precedes every thought when speaking of 2020.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Steve Sisolak will hold a press conference today at 3 p.m. to provide an update on Nevada’s COVID-19 immunization efforts. The press conference will be conducted virtually, and will be streamed live on the Governor’s YouTube channel here.

Most of us might agree, 2020 was the annus horribilis of our lifetime. But just as the darkest cloud has a silver lining, 2020 has offered one thing about which we can all brag and be proud. I can't think of what that one thing might be just now, though it does occur to me that learning how to cut our own hair might be a thing to celebrate and be genuinely proud, unless of course you're a barber.

YERINGTON, Nev. — Individualized and group support services for people and families impacted by addiction and mental health are now available for free in Yerington, Fernley, and Dayton through Foundation for Recovery, a community nonprofit led by volunteers and staff in recovery from substance use and mental health themselves.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City offers a slate of in-person and online programs in January, ranging from online family projects to historical lectures. The offerings fall under four different programs: Family Fun Saturday and the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series, both occurring online, as well as Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations and Curator’s Corner programming, both available in-person at the museum. Carson City-based DeBug Computer faced a Christmas challenge. Every year, the company hosts a Photos with Santa event with proceeds going to a local non-profit. The DeBug team huddled with Santa to discuss how to reach the children safely during the coronavirus pandemic. They decided to ask children, with their parents’ consent and supervision, to email a letter to Santa@debugcomputer.net.

This time of year I always think about Cappy. In charge of Ski Incline in the early days, Cappy Cook was a hail-fellow-well-met, on and off the slopes. He played in the Rose Bowl for Stanford in '52, ran a packing outfit in Yosemite, coached our Junior National Ski Team, and his handshake would leave me crippled for days, so of course I never ventured to give him a hug.

On a picturesque lakefront property with mountain views sits Reno’s new independent living retirement community, Mountain Lakes Estates Retirement Living, 765 South Meadows Drive. The active lifestyle community completed construction and recently welcomed its first residents.

The Carson City Symphony Association presentation of “Joyful Noise — A Holiday Treat” concert is available for viewing on the Carson City Symphony channel on YouTube here and from Facebook.com/CarsonCitySymphony here. The concert features John and Cherie Shipley with their Joyful Noise Chorus and Band. They have been performing "Joyful Noise" concerts each December since 2002.

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed and issued an emergency directive Monday that implements a moratorium on most residential evictions in Nevada through March 31, 2021.

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced on Sunday that he is extending current coronavirus health and safety restrictions for another month and putting in place a new moratorium on evictions through the end of March.

Carson Valley is putting on a show, and we don’t just mean our glorious Fall colors! The Carson Valley Arts Council is hosting the first annual Carson Valley Art Studio Tour next October 2021, and they are seeking input from interested fine artists at this time. All fine art media will be considered, and shared studio space will be coordinated by the CVAST team.

This year has been extremely challenging and with the impact of Covid; many of our families are struggling to ensure they can celebrate Christmas. However, generous community members have come together determined to help these families have a Christmas celebration not even Covid can stop.

To say 2020 was a crazy and eventful year would be an understatement. I think just about everyone can agree on that. But in the midst of a pandemic, a summer of protests, and an election year that shattered records, (pick a category, any catagory) it seems nevadans also found alot to disagree on. It was easy to see if one attended any of these protests.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Several fundraisers, including the annual “Share Your Christmas” Food Drive will be available throughout the Carson City, Minden and Reno areas on Friday. You can visit the North Pole safely as part of a drive-thru Santa's Village experience at V&T Railway in Carson City, beginning Friday into the weekend. A living nativity scene will be featured at First United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday. Combined with train rides in Virginia City, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement. It was a year of uncertainty. A year when we felt a need for something more. A need for peace. It was a year that felt similar to 2020. It was 2001.

The year that we watched the airplanes crash into the Twin Towers. The year we felt hopeless and confused and a desire to connect with people and with God. Seeing that need, the Carson City First United Methodist Church began what has become one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in Carson City.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights holiday celebration goes virtual on Friday. Santa Claus will arrive virtually at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and in-person at Battle Born Harley Davidson on Saturday for pictures with families and kids of all ages. Demonstrators gathered at the Carson City Courthouse on Thursday in support of a court hearing by the Trump campaign regarding the Nevada 2020 elections.

While Christmas tree cutting permits sold out in the Tahoe Basin almost as soon as they were available, with 2,000 permits being snatched up by Nov. 17, not all is lost if you've decided to brave the wilderness to cut down your very own festive tree.
