Carson City is just one area that is noticing a worldwide trend of labor shortages in restaurants, and due to that shortage, several locally-owned eateries are being forced to reduce the number of days they're open during the week, or stop serving dinner.

Stacey Giomi is a long-time Carson City resident, and the newest member on the Board of Supervisors after being voted into the vacancy left by Karen Abowd. Giomi spent 30 plus years as a firefighter for our community before retiring as Fire Chief. The annual Camp Carson program for kindergarten through 6th grade children through Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is now open for registration with camp beginning June 17.

Is it the middle of the work week already? That's what a 3-day holiday weekend brings. Heading into Memorial Day, May 27, 2019, we urge all to take time out of your day to honor those who served and died defending our country. Memorial Day is the day we celebrate those men and women who passed while serving in the United States Armed Forces. There are events Monday in Carson City at the Stewart Indian School Cemetery and at Lone Mountain Cemetery and in Fernley at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

CARSON CITY — Thirty-four juniors and seniors from Carson High School were honored at Nevada Governor’s Mansion last Tuesday evening for their efforts in a university level introductory education course. In partnership with the College of Education at the University of Nevada - Reno, CHS offers the EDU 110 course for students interested in pursuing a teaching career.

The weekend came and went fast. But don't fret. There's a choice. Are the days ahead half full or half empty? You know the drill. As we prepare for Monday, May 20, 2019, we congratulate the 2019 graduates of Western Nevada College who sweated through the books and assignments to earn their well-deserved diplomas. Coming to Carson City on Friday, May 17, the Brewery Arts Center Celtic Series features The Sophie & Fiachra Trio who will perform in the Maizie Harris Jesse Theatre.

The Sophie & Fiachra Trio are a group of “musiciens sans frontieres' who refuse to let the Atlantic sunder their love of their own and one another’s Irish and Québecois musical traditions.”

Comprising of Irish uilleann piper Fiachra O’Regan, Québec fiddler/singer Sophie Lavoie, and guitarist André Marchand, the trio take traditional Irish and Québécois traditional music, blended with Lavoie’s “lithe and masterful” compositions. Their choice of songs will “captivate the most casual listener”

The Children's Museum in Carson City will host a Summer Science Camp this year. Participants will get hands on lessons in science, art, music and literary projects tied to the Carson River watershed, as well as learning about regional geology and mining, geothermal and solar energy, biomes of Northern Nevada and hot air balloons.

Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

Sierra Lutheran High School, in collaboration with Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School and Mt. Cross Ministries, has released its 2019 Summer Programs registration. Collectively, the three entities will offer seven unique summer programs, including two week-long overnight programs.

On April 22nd 2019, the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada hosted their first clean-up of Fulstone Wetlands as part of the Adopt-A-Trail program.

Around 90 participants picked up 200 pounds of trash! The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department wants to extend our thanks for the efforts of the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Truly a springtime to remember in Carson City as we say goodbye to April, which leaves us with a spontaneous final chill, and hello to Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Temperatures should head back up into the low 60s by afternoon. Looking ahead there's art showings and painting workshops, a C-Hill hike to see the firefighting sheep, a school district strategic planning meeting, a Salsa dance class, and "Ideas on Tap," a monthly series of interactive conversations at The Union Eatery and Taphouse.
