Thursday happenings in Carson City and beyond

August 2, 2018 (All day)

The Washoe Zephyr is a double-sided coin. The breeze is a welcome reprieve from hot summer afternoons and can do wonders clearing the smoke from the valley. On the other hand, that wind does local firefighters no favors if it just helps push the fire line faster. There may be some relief from the bad air today, but you’ll still want to take it easy.

South Carson City fire prompts voluntary evacuations in Carson Colony, Voltaire Canyon areas

This story has been updated to a new page. Go here for the latest on overnight firefighting efforts underway in Voltaire Canyon.
***
UPDATE 11:09PM: A voluntary evacuation order was placed Tuesday night for the Carson Colony area off of Curry Street in South Carson City. The Voltaire Canyon area is also voluntary evacuation. Plans are in the works to open a shelter for those displaced.
***
UPDATE 10:54PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Tuesday night's fire at Voltaire Canyon was started by campers who were burning excrement and toilet paper.

There were two campers detained and were cooperative, said Furlong. There were up to eight individuals who were camping in the area who were taken off the hill.
The two who were detained were cooperative and provided statements. Charges, if any, would be filed by the U.S. Forest Service, which has jurisdiction of the land that is burning, said Furlong.
***
UPDATE 10:03PM: The fire in Voltaire Canyon that is burning in southwest Carson City is on Forest Service land and is moving toward last year’s burn area, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. While there are not any structures threatened at this time, a voluntary evacuation remains for the Voltaire Canyon area.

There remains concern of winds pushing the fire into other areas, said Slamon. There are currently firefighters staged at C-Hill and Kings Canyon areas. While there are not any evacuation orders for those areas at this time, Slamon is advising people in the C-Hill and Kings Canyon areas to be prepared to leave.
