Sunday, August 23: Things to do around Carson City

Planes, trains, and automobiles await! The Nevada State Railroad Museum features rides on the McKeen Motor Car this weekend. Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. Also on some fierce wheels this Sunday are the Carson Victory Rollers. Our roller derby team is hosting a scrimmage and collecting donations of school supplies at the Community Center.

I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: August 22-23

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

Friday lineup: Carson City Jazz festival features Count Basie tribute among 3 venues

Jazz & Beyond, Carson City Music Festival, continues on today, Friday, with three free events. The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.

The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

Thursday, August 20: Things to do in Carson City

The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.

Motown and art hit the stage today at the Community Center as part of the ongoing Jazz and Beyond festival. Well, the CCAI art show and sale opens at 5 p.m. in the theater lobby. The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative has a meeting this evening, and there is sure to be a lot to cover. Their major fundraiser, ‘Bark, Whine, and Dine,’ hits Fuji Park on August 29.

It’s back to school for the kids of Carson City. Please keep an eye out for little ones at crosswalks, and just be prepared for more traffic in general. Learning a thing or two isn’t just for the K-12 crowd, though. Head over to the Brewery Arts Center tonight for a free presentation on the History of Motown by John Shipley. Tickets to tomorrow’s Music of Motown performance at the Community Center are still available. The show features a band led by Lloyd Williams, popularly known as the lead singer of Otis Day and the Knights from Animal House.

Jazz and Beyond festival features CCAI Art in the Lobby on Tuesday

As part of the citywide music festival, Jazz & Beyond, the Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art, 5-7pm, in the Carson City Community Center lobby, Tuesday, August 18 prior to the 7pm "Music of Motown" concert. The lobby will open at 5pm and the public is cordially invited.

I love August in Carson City and it’s because of Jazz and Beyond. Music everywhere. The Tahoe Ridge Winery is hosting Jazz Van Gogh, a guitar and flute duo. Jazz and Beyond festival in Carson City gets busy Thursday with three venues

The 2015 Carson City Jazz and Beyond music festival heats up Thursday with multiple performances around town to hit all the right notes and music styles with piano jazz, blues, roots and smooth jazz at three different venues.

Today is National Lazy Day, and the options for taking it easy are endless. A day spent poolside at Carson Hot Springs, lunch and some live music at Comma Coffee, or just playing some board games with the family at Nerdvana are all good ideas. Dancing the night away is always a fun start to the week, even if it’s not lazy. Check out Rosebud’s Dance Band in the Comma Coffee Courtyard, or head to El Charro Avita for High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s weekly night out. Dachshund lovers may want to head to Fuji Park for the Silver State Sausage Society Sausage Social: try saying that one five times fast.

The Carson City Library is wrapping up its adult summer reading program with a special presentation by adventurer, photographer, cyclist Rick Gunn. Like, did you totally know that Clueless is playing at the Galaxy Theater tonight? Miss out on that? As if.

Over the next two weeks you’ll have a plethora of melody to choose from at venues throughout town. Enjoy an outdoor concert at Third and Carson with Drinking with Clowns. Sassafras is thrilled to grab Groove Session for a show; they’re usually off touring. Mo’z Motley Blues will give you a reason to dance at Living the Good Life. Hot August Summer Sipping Saturday at the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk

Summer fun looks like a wine walk, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, August 1, the festivities begin at 1 p.m., rain or shine. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins. Every first Saturday over thirty shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

The wine walk runs from 1pm to 5pm. Sign up at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jacks, Bella Fiore Wines, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Remedy's Bar, or Touched by Angels.

Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival to feature Motown events

A highlight of the 2015 Jazz & Beyond Festival will be a two-part Motown special. First is a free lecture-demonstration by musician-educator John Shipley. It will feature music, visuals, a guitar raffle, a no-host bar, and a guest appearance by Lloyd Williams of Otis Day and the Knights on Monday, August 17, at the Brewery Arts Center.

The second part of the Motown special is a ticketed concert showcasing Williams, the original singing voice from the hit movie Animal House, on Tuesday, August 18, 7 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

Millennium Bugs Jazz Combo plays Artown Wednesday in Reno

The Millennium Bugs, a five-piece combo affiliated with the Mile High Jazz Band, will play traditional jazz in an Artown concert on Wednesday, July 22, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., inside St. James Infirmary in Reno. The venue, a casual spot with a vintage feel, serves eclectic mixed drinks and beer inside and on the rooftop deck. Admission is free.

Band members are Dan Lancaster on saxes, clarinet, and flute; Gil Linsley on trumpet and flugelhorn; David Bugli on keyboard and trombone; George Worth on bass and trombone; and Hal Little on drums.

USAF Golden West Winds will perform a free concert this Saturday evening, Aug. 16, in the backyard of the Governor's Mansion as part of the Jazz and Beyond festival this month in Carson City.

People are encouraged to hear Back Forty at 4:30 p.m. and CeCe Gable with the DG Kicks Octet at 6:00 p.m. People are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
