Bluegrass and Punk and Celtic: oh my! Three music festivals highlight Saturday’s events in Carson City

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! Today we’ve got a ton of great events, including three separate music festivals at Shoe Tree Brewing Co., Bowers Mansion, and the Brewery Arts Center!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, a bluegrass festival at Bowers Mansion, Celtic favorites at the BAC, tours at the Nevada State Museum, train rides, standup comedy at the Carson Nugget, a block party at Silver Oak Golf Course, a Boy Scouts car show at Fuji Park, "'Kutz for Kids' and more.

Wreath ceremony for fallen Carson City law officers among events Thursday around town

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Dinner and Concert Combo: Wheeled Food Wednesday and jazz trio at BAC

It’s still summer, so Wheeled Food Wednesdays are still rolling through each week to the Brewery Art Center to bring great food to the community. This week, in cooperation with Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, the Wesley Orsolic Trio will be playing a live show at the BAC from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 activities abound around the capital city. There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. Inaugural Open Studio Tour featured during Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival

An Open Studio Art event featuring Moongirl Studio will be presented by Mile High Jazz Band Association as part of the 2019 Jazz & Beyond Festival, and is supported by grants from the Carson City Cultural Commission, The Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts, and private donations.

Meteor watch party, outdoor jazz, family movie night and more Tuesday around Carson City

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. The 16th annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival took over a sunny Friday evening in the state capital.

A blend of smooth jazz music combined with special art exhibits, demonstrations and art sales brought dozens of attendees to the Bliss and Governor's Mansions.

The 16th Annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music and Art Festival kicks off Friday at Bliss Mansion, 608 Elizabeth Street from 4 to 6 p.m., and continues that evening at the Governor’s Mansion, directly across Mountain Street. The free event includes live music, art, food, and tours of the Bliss Mansion.

Carson City Jazz and Beyond 2019 announces poster art winner

The Jazz and Beyond festival committee announces that the winner of the 2019 poster and program cover art contest is Reta Hanks, a member of the Nevada Artists Association, Capital City Arts Initiative and several other artists organizations in Nevada and California.

Jazz & Beyond Committee Announces 2019 Art Contest

Mile High Band Association’s 2019 Jazz and Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for Carson-Tahoe area artists. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover.

A T-shirt may also feature one of the designs submitted.

The entry deadline is May 15th, 2019.

UPDATE: The Subaru, Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers will be leading an Awareness Workshop at the Carson City Community Center in the Bonanza Room tonight. CARSON CITY — Jukebox International Film Festival has opened its doors for submissions for its third year. Known as “the festival that specializes in music-themed films,” JIFF is accepting new entries in the following categories: Narrative Features, Narrative Documentaries, Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts, and Music Videos.

It’s a very special Friday for the kids of Carson City: it’s the last day of summer vacation. Take full advantage of your free time and check out some of today’s activities. Live music at McFadden Plaza tonight features local cover band, Deception. The Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival kicks off tonight with a band in the Davis Creek Campground. The U.S. Air Force’s Jazz Ensemble performs at the Bob Boldrick Theater as part of the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Free tickets have been available at the Chamber of Commerce for a few weeks, and if any are left, their numbers will be limited.

Thank goodness for Thursday. The weekend is just hours away, but there is no reason to wait for the fun to start. Take a stroll with Muscle Powered: today’s hike will wind through the far east side of Carson, from Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Artsy Fartsy Art Galley hosts an artist meet and greet for Catherine King; enjoy a glass of wine while discovering her newest work. Head down the rabbit hole, and you may wind up on McFadden Plaza. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club brings the recent live-action version of Alice in Wonderland to the big screen on the downtown stage.

Let’s give this outdoors thing another try. Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.

The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival makes an appearance downtown with Under the Radar in the Comma Coffee Courtyard, followed by the Mile High Jazz Band in McFadden Square. Join local author Cindy Sutherland for this month’s edition of the Brown Bag Lunch Series at the Nevada State Library and Archives. Freshman, and their parents, are welcomed to Carson High School this morning for orientation, an overview of policies, and a tour.
