Holiday tradition: 2014 skating season begins at Carson City's Arlington Square Ice Rink

Black Friday may be reserved for football games, leftovers and after Thanksgiving holiday shopping but in downtown Carson City, blades, hot chocolate and holiday music were the orders of the day for teens and families at the opening day of Arlington Square Skating Rink in Carson City.

Sheriff's Office launches 'Operation Christmas' through the holiday shopping season

With Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season begins and Christmas Day will soon be here. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office wants you to know that we will be increasing our presence around businesses and shopping centers in Carson City.

Sheriff Ken Furlong has announced that “Operation Christmas” will be put into action with an emphasis on keeping you safe while shopping.

Salvation Army Angel Trees and Toy Barrels throughout the area

As the holiday shopping season gets underway, Carson City's Salvation Army has set up several Angel Trees and Toy Barrels throughout Carson City. Please consider grabbing a tag from a tree, or dropping off an un-wrapped toy for a child in the area.

Holiday Craft Fair season kicks-off Saturday

Saturday, Nov. 8 is a busy day for area crafters. Four arts and craft events are scheduled throughout town. Get a jump on your holiday shopping at the following:

Comstock Mobile Village Craft and Rummage Sale located on College Parkway across from the Carson Airport from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Over 20 vendors will be offering hand-made goods, food, and rummage. Free coffee will help keep you warm.

I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: October 10-12

Happy Friday, Carson City. Many people in our area have Facebook accounts, but not everyone, so I am pleased to bring you the event list that is featured on my Facebook page, I love Carson City.

Every week, as I have for the last two years, I follow the pages of local businesses and organizations, search website calendars, and compile a list of anything and everything going on in this community. Some of it is family friendly, some is just for adults, but all of it is nearby.

RSVP Nevada Day celebration and carnival to celebrate Silver State's 150th birthday

For the 29th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. will sponsor the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park on Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, 2014, RSVP executive director Susan Haas announced Friday.

Earlier this year RSVP went all out over July 4 with a spectacular fireworks display, synchronized to music, to mark Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. For Nevada Day weekend, visitors can expect plenty of games, thrilling carnival rides and entertainment venues.

“We will have a lot more family fun and entertainment than ever before this year,” said Haas.

Sierra Resort at Lake Tahoe to open Friday

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort will open Friday for the 2013-14 season with early season conditions and very limited terrain. Sierra Resort will run the Easy Rider Express chairlift accessing the skiers and snowboarders right half of Broadway trail.

This is a green run and will have small to medium rail features, giving guests a chance to get their park legs back underneath them. Forecasts show possible snow showers throughout the weekend and into next week for Lake Tahoe, potentially allowing Sierra Resort to open more trails conditions pending.

Ladies' Night Out Tuesday features food, wine and shopping to benefit Food for Thought

Nevada Posts 26th Consecutive Taxable Sales Increase In August

CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded its 26th consecutive month of taxable sales increases in August, when consumers spent $3.7 billion on goods and services for a 7.6 percent jump over August 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.

The last decrease in statewide taxable sales came in June 2010, when a 0.3 percent decline was reported over June 2009.

Taxable sales grew by 8.1 percent in Clark County and jumped double-digits in Washoe County to 10.5 percent.

Hot wings dished up spicy this weekend in Carson City

Whether they come hot, mild or fire, there's plenty of heat to be found this early fall weekend in Carson City. The Ultimate Wing Wars, a chicken wing cook-off event at the Best Western Carson Station Hotel Casino in Carson City, continues through Sunday.
This second annual event was organized by W.R. “Willie” Davison the self-proclaimed “Chicken Wing King.” The festival features the region’s best bars, restaurants and catering groups who are dishing up their sauced-up wings to the public and are fighting for bragging rights as to who has the best wings.

Nevada Records Two Straight Years Of Taxable Sales Increases With 7.9 Percent Gain In June

CARSON CITY – Nevada recorded two straight years of increases in taxable sales through June, with a statewide gain of 7.9 percent over June 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.

Taxable sales totaled $3.9 billion in June compared to $3.6 billion in June 2011. For the 2012 fiscal year, taxable sales rose 7.6 percent over 2011.

Clark County taxable sales were up 8.9 percent in June and Washoe County saw a 3 percent gain.

Nevada Posts Double-Digit Gain In Taxable Sales In May, 23rd Consecutive Month Of Increases

CARSON CITY – Nevada taxable sales jumped by double-digits in May, with consumers purchasing $3.7 billion in goods for a 10.4 percent increase over May 2011, the state Department of Taxation reported today.

Clark County taxable sales were up 10 percent, while Washoe County saw a 4.9 percent gain.

Beware of holiday scams

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is warning Nevadans who may be participating in last minute holiday shopping to be aware of identity theft, charitable donation scams, and text message scams.

Holiday Season Traffic and Travel Tips from Nevada Highway Patrol

With the end-of-the-year holiday season upon us along with heavy traffic anticipated on the roadways and highways this four-day weekend, the Nevada Highway Patrol would like to share the following travel and traffic-related safety tips for motorists:

  • If you are making a journey when inclement weather is anticipated, especially over any of the mountain passes, be sure to check the most highways conditions by dialing 511 or by clicking on www.nevadadot.com
  • Always wear a seat belt and be certain all vehicle occupants are properly restrained

Carson City unemployment drops to 12 percent

Unemployment figures released this morning show the state's overall unemployment rate held steady at 13.4 percent, still the highest in the nation and well above the 9 percent national average.

Carson City's jobless rate dropped to 12 percent in October, down from 12.4 percent the previous month. In October 2010, the unemployment was 13.1 percent.

Unemployment in the Las Vegas metro area dropped to 13.1 percent, down from 13.4 percent in September. The Reno metro area also saw a drop, from 12.6 to 12.1 percent.

Western Nevada College Craft Fair

The annual Western Nevada College Craft Fair will run Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the main lobby of the Bristlecone Building. Enjoy a chance to start holiday shopping between classes or on lunch break. Students, faculty and the public can browse the main lobby where more than 20 crafters will be selling a wide variety of handmade items.
This year's crafters will be selling everything from jewelry, gift baskets and candles to picture frames, artwork, candy and pies. The event is sponsored by the WNC classified employees, who use proceeds to help fund professional development activities.

Ladies Night Out Holiday Shopping
