Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Now that we are in November, thoughts turn to the holiday season. That means craft fairs. St. Paul’s Lutheran Family on Saliman welcomes you to their annual Craftique Open House. You’ll find the Young at Heart Seniors Club hosting a faire at the Douglas County Community Center. The Carson Nugget’s Sierra Room will be home to several artisans, vendors, and crafters during today’s wine walk. There’s quite a bit more, and plenty that doesn’t involve shopping, so take a look and have a great time.

SATURDAY:

Art doll maker Christine Shively-Benjamin of Carson City will be among thirty artists from Northern Nevada featured at the 23th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 3 and 4 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 20 pieces of original art will be given away.

“Every year we invite some of the best artists in Northern Nevada to exhibit at our show,” says chairperson Julie Sulahria. “It’s always held on the first weekend in November as an opportunity to purchase creative gifts before the holidays.

It’s Nevada Day weekend, and that means the annual parade and festivities will bombard downtown Carson City with thousands of revelers. I made the decision to put all of the parade related events into a separate list for a few reasons: one, this list would be way too long otherwise; two, Halloween fun is plentiful all weekend long; and three, I want my list to be as easy to read as possible. Read on for events throughout Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Silver and Virginia Cities.

Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

One might think that the end of summer means that the fun times are over: they would be wrong. This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The annual Genoa Candy Dance is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and this weekend welcomes the first ever Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park, as well. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

SATURDAY:

Don’t think that Sundays are just for rest, there is plenty to coax you out of your pajamas today. Take a trip with Santa at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Search for treasures and do your Christmas shopping at Fuji Park today, one of the multiple craft shows in town. Enjoy a free concert at the Community Center courtesy of the Capital City Community Band. Dayton is celebrating a small town Christmas tonight; bust out your best ugly sweater and join the fun. SUNDAY:

Want to find out what is going through the minds of the amazing students of Carson High School? Parents, teachers, older adults, younger adults, the community of Carson City, and even small pets want to know.

Need to do some holiday shopping? Wrap some gifts without the kids? Go to see a movie? Have brunch with your significant other or just sit in silence on the couch? Then “Parent’s Time Out!” is for you!

Teens from Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s JTF Performance Troupe (and adult supervisors) will watch your child(ren) for five hours of well-supervised and super fun activities at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, 1870 Russell Way, Carson City, on Saturday, December 17th from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Sierra-at-Tahoe will open this Saturday, Nov. 26, launching the 2016-17 winter season with early season conditions and limited terrain accessed by two chairlifts and two surface lifts.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a little impatient. In just a few days’ time, a feast of family, friends, gratitude, and turkey will be served up. While we’re waiting, go check out the vendors at the Carson Mall and get a jump on some of your holiday shopping. The art exhibits around town are always a nice way to spend a few hours. Monday Night Football sees the Raiders battle the Texans; grab some friends and place your bets. Learn a few tricks in the kitchen with the Healthy Communities Coalition: their free monthly cooking class is open to everyone.

Refuge from politics features painters, photographers, basket makers and more

More than thirty artists from Northern Nevada including Reno, Carson City and Sparks — several nationally known-— will be featured at the 22th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 4 and 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 25 pieces of original art will be given away.

Vendors are needed for the Craft Fair & Quartermania, hosted by St. Ann’s Women’s Community and Dayton Valley Lion’s Club, Saturday, Nov. 12 at Dayton Valley Community Center, 170 Pike St., in Old Town Dayton.

St. Ann’s has hosted the craft fair in the past and this is the first time the two non-profit organizations are teaming up to create on fun event, said Jeanne Broughton, who co-chairs with Heather Motta.

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is hosting the Nevada Day Carnival and Fair for a third decade at Mills Park over the Nevada Day weekend.

Now in its 31st year, RSVP’s Nevada Day Carnival and Fair provides a fun family entertainment venue during the Silver State’s statehood celebration.

The Carson Mall Fine Arts Faire has a powerful synergy of businesses working together and artist advocacy to provide a visual arts show for the Carson City community.

On November 3, 4 and 5, the Carson Mall located at 1313 South Carson Street, Carson City will be hosting the first ever Fine Arts Faire, which will include the work of over 25 artists from primarily Northern Nevada and as far away as Kalispell, Montana.

It’s done snowing, but that doesn’t mean that the roads are clear. Please drive carefully. There are still great options for holiday shopping: craft fairs at the Carson Mall and Browser’s Corner Book Store, in addition to our great local shops. If you’ve got your gifts, but don’t feel like wrapping them, then the Rainbow Girls Gift Wrap is for you! Head to the Carson Mall and let the girls of Assembly #7 take the chore off your hands. Karaoke at the Firkin and Fox is a fun way to finish up your Monday.

MONDAY:

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) released the Buy Nevada Holiday Gift Guide for the 2015 holiday season.

Available online, the Buy Nevada catalog highlights Buy Nevada members. With more than 100 businesses from around the state, showcasing the many food and agriculture products produced or processed in Nevada to help consumers shop local on “Shop Local Saturday.”

It can be difficult to get away from the commercialism of Christmas and the holidays with all the fuss about best deals and “red cups.” Step back in time this season and capture the family-friendly spirit of Christmas with a trip to historic Virginia City, Nev.

No need to wait for black Friday or Small Business Saturday to get a jump on your holiday shopping. Western Nevada College’s annual Craft Fair is today, as is Santa’s Village at the Carson City Senior Center. Support local artists and crafters while finding a one of a kind gift for your loved ones. If you have a book-lover on your list, a book signed by local author Ken Beaton is easy to acquire. Browser’s Corner is holding a meet and greet with him this evening.

THURSDAY:

Carson City — particularly the shopping available in Carson City — is the feature of Nevada Travel’s NevadaGram this month.

“In my mind the true mark of a city is whether or not you can do all your Christmas shopping there,” David Toll wrote in the NevadaGram.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. The temperatures will be brisk, but nothing a scarf and sweater can’t help guard against. The real cold shows up late Sunday and brings with it a good chance for snow. Mary Poppins would advise we bear it with a spoon full of sugar.

Get your holiday shopping done at the annual Home 4 the Holidays Craft Fair Saturday, November 21 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. It’ll take place at Nevada Humane Society at 2825 Longley Lane in Reno. Admission is free.

Home 4 the Holidays Craft Fair will feature a wide variety of local vendors selling handcrafted art, jewelry, and many pet related gifts and pet supplies that will make great holiday gifts for the animal lovers on your shopping list. Artists who participate will be contributing a percentage of their sales to help the homeless pets at Nevada Humane Society.

Carrying on its trailblazing tradition, Nevada Magazine could not be fenced in last Friday at the Nevada Press Association awards banquet as it claimed five first-place awards including the coveted General Excellence award, the top prize in the magazine category.
