Carson City was a 19th century hub for mining, transportation and more. It was the place where a young Samuel Clemens began his literary career, and where his nom de plume Mark Twain was first revealed. Carson City was as Old West as they came.

CARSON CITY — The old saying that legends never die might also be said about old locomotives. Many of those iron horses, long lost to time or the scrap heap, live on through historic photographs, artwork and the hearts and minds and skillful hands of railroad buffs.

The 20th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns once again to the Sierra on Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. CARSON CITY — On the heels of an incredibly successful 2019 season and due to popular demand, V&T Railway has begun early ticket sale booking for the 2020 season. As with prior seasons, the 2020 season will include vintage steam train rides from Carson City to Virginia City, Toast of the Canyon wine and beer trains and the popular Polar Express in addition to other themed and special event trains.

The Carson City Historical Society will be holding an open house at the Foreman-Roberts House (the Yellow House), 1207 North Carson Street, Carson City this Sunday, Feb. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. The Foreman-Roberts House and the Carriage House will both be open for tours.

CARSON CITY — A new museum as well as recreation, entertainment and dining opportunities will bloom this spring in Nevada. From the opening of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum in Carson City to the debut of new restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada delivers uncommon experiences this season.

Stuart Rathbone first learned about Donner Pass after he moved to Northern Nevada from the UK five years ago. As he got to know the story, he became increasingly fascinated with the scale of the journey over the Sierra, and the scale of the engineering involved in opening that route to traffic.

The Carson City Department of Arts & Culture in partnership with First Lady Kathy Sisolak on Thursday proudly announced its inaugural Arts Initiative exhibition, “The First Lady Presents … Ronnie Rector,” at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion.

The Foreman Roberts House will be open one Sunday a month with various exciting displays, the first being the “History of the Foreman Roberts House.”

Both the Foreman Roberts and the Carriage House will be open on Sunday, January 26 from 2-5.

Douglas County has multiple priority projects on the books right now, including education innovation, distinctive downtowns, becoming an aviation destinations and more, but one in particular has it’s roots set firmly in the Carson valley’s history of agriculture, and that is "Agrihoods."

Please help save Adele’s building in Carson City, Nev. There was great pride in our city when the Captain Porter’s House, now Adele’s, was first built. A quote from the newspaper is as follows:

The Carson City Historical Society has recently been thrust into the spotlight because of the proposed demolition of the 155-year old building once occupied by Café at Adele’s and preceding businesses through the years attracting hundreds of customers through those historic doors.

RENO — Nevada art enthusiasts, collectors, and researchers now have an enhanced primary source they can reference to help deepen their interests in and awareness of Nevada art and artists.

CARSON CITY — A new year signals new adventures, and travelers can plan a one-of-a-kind experience with the 2020 Nevada Visitor’s Guide. The guide’s new Quick Fix section answers the need for insider info on quirky roadside stops, local music venues, only-in-Nevada products and more.

Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. The Nevada State Museum is offering a step back into Carson City’s history on Saturday, Jan. 11, complete with a presentation from the city’s founding family.

It was in January of 1870 when the doors of the Carson City Mint were opened to the public by its first superintendent — and Carson City’s founder — Abe Curry.

The Carson City Historical Society Board held an emergency meeting on Dec. 21 to discuss the eminent demolition of Adele’s, and strategized on how this historic building could be preserved.

The board voted to pursue a fund raising campaign to work with the community to preserve the 155 year-old Adele’s building at 1112 North Carson Street, Carson City, Nev.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced the awarding of $22,639.60 in statewide grants to support individual artists in the production and presentation of artistic projects that will occur between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2020.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

The Carson City School District was a point of highlight at the Nevada Association of School Boards annual conference in Reno, the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The school district and trustees hauled in nearly a quarter of all the awards (4 out of 19) among the 17 districts statewide.
