A Profile in Courage - Wayne and Ruth Zimmerman
Submitted by admin on Mon, 02/20/2017 - 6:06pmCOURAGE? You often know it when you see it in action. You definitely feel it. It can be witnessed over time. The attitude is sometimes defined by patience and heart. Webster writes: "facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult, or painful, instead of withdrawing from it, the courage to do what one thinks is right such as in willingness to live by one's convictions." This story began a long time ago as a little six year old girl in northwest Ohio. Bonnie Zimmerman was in first grade with me and I loved her. She seemed vulnerable and in need of friendship support.

Submitted by editor on Mon, 09/05/2016 - 6:59pmThis is the first Labor Day I didn’t force myself to work. After the Temple Burn at Burning Man, I decided I needed to dedicate a little time today to a different kind of work. That work was emotional in nature.
See, the Temple Burn on the Playa is a somber moment. It’s a time of reflection, letting go, and grief. The purpose is to release pain, bad habits, and what no longer serves.

Thank you for proving my point, over and over again
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 11/07/2014 - 8:18amThere really is nothing more to be said. The only argument a "Democrat" can offer in the name of "being open to new ideas" is either pure marxism or just the same plain old politics of personal destruction.
Here is an idea that that I am sure is "new" to guys like this:
The US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8.
Amendments 1-10.
The Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers.
Reply to Peter (good grief...!) Hennessey
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 11/05/2014 - 3:28pmI can't help but agree with Peter Hennessey when he says he sees a "deep, irreconcilable mental and psychological divide between the two Parties (sic)." That is manifestly the case.
In 2010 I volunteered for Rory Reid's campaign and made the mistake of mentioning that I had been a registered Republican for 34 years. Predictably I was given a list of supposedly "persuadable" Republicans to canvas, which I dutifully did.
A reply to a reply to a ...(good grief...!)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 11/05/2014 - 8:41amRich Dunn's reply, with a title addressed personally to me, illustrates the deep, irreconcilable mental and psychological divide between the two Parties, and the pavlovian response so typical of Democrats -- attack the messenger, not the message. What makes it especially funny is that the best argument for the Democrats to vote for their candidate in AD40 was that he had been a good... Republican...? It's a free country and you can call yourself whatever you want, just as the people are free to see you for who you are.
And so the people have spoken yesterday.
Tesla Motors -- Good News Is... Bad News?
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 09/07/2014 - 11:12pmThe plain news is that Tesla motors sealed a deal with Nevada to locate a major new plant in Reno. You'd think that would be good news, with major investment and thousands of permanent jobs for the area. People should be cheering. But it comes in exchange for major tax breaks. That’s the bad news. So, instead of cheering, some people are turning on the Governor and others. Some, like the Nevada Policy Research Institute (NPRI) are raising policy, legal and constitutional issues.

Gov. Sandoval: One year after IHOP tragedy, our community stands strong
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/06/2012 - 9:37amA year ago today, Carson City experienced an unspeakable event in the tragic shooting at our local IHOP restaurant. Whether you were at work, school, home or going about your day, you no doubt remember Sept. 6, 2011, and the senseless act of violence that touched our community. Fear and anxiety was followed by a sense of urgency and the desire to do something; and these emotions turned into sadness and grief. But through it all, as members of the Nevada family, we found each other.

Movie Review: 'The Descendants' offers a fine cast headed by George Clooney
Submitted by admin on Sat, 01/28/2012 - 2:12pmThe Academy Award nominated film "The Descendants," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy movie house in Carson City, is a hard-eyed romantic comedy with an ensemble cast headed by George Clooney, the only name star aboard.
Doesn't matter, this is a fine cast from Clooney as Matt King to Judy Greer as Julie Speer, wife of a real estate salesman who … but let's let that wait.
The film opens with a scene of an attractive woman riding a boat. She's laughing in the wind. This is before an of the opening credits. No explanation given or needed.

But this week the IHOP did reopen, with the governor, mayor and sheriff in attendance to reassure residents that we will not let the acts of a madman control our lives, that we can put this tragic episode behind us.
