CASA of Carson City received an early holiday gift from Casey Neilon, an accounting firm with offices in Reno and Carson City, in the form of a sizeable donation.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, provides quality court-appointed advocacy for abused and neglected children in child welfare cases, through a network of community volunteers who work with children to ensure their voices are heard during court proceedings.

Carson High School's NJROTC Drill and Color Guard team competed in their first ever ‘virtual’ drill competition hosted by University of North Carolina ROTC program. The various teams’ performances were captured on video and sent to the University for judging.

Be a part of bringing hope by voting on contestant art pieces to decide the “Social Media Fave” in the Donor Network West annual art contest. Four Carson High students, Anthony Larry, Connor Lampert, Danielle Van Dusen, and Sarai Jauregui Rivas made the first cut, though all of CHS Graphic Design Instructor Patricia Ababio’s students submitted entries.

He is a senior at Carson High School, and his last year is, to say the least, unconventional. Adults have had their say, so how about a chat with this popular young man as he sports a 1980s hairstyle called a mullet in which the hair is short on the sides and long at the front and back.

CARSON CITY — By executive order, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and state public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Jenkins, whose funeral is being held today in Elko.

On March 27, 2020, at approximately 5:54 AM, a Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant had stopped to assist a motorist on US-93 and White Pine county mile marker 106, north of Ely, NV. During this contact, the motorist open fired on Sgt. Ben Jenkins, who was struck and killed.

UPDATE 12:30 p.m.:

On March 27, 2020, at approximately 5:54 AM, a Nevada Highway Patrol Sergeant had stopped to assist a motorist on US-93 and White Pine county mile marker 106, north of Ely, NV. During this contact, the motorist open fired on Sgt. Ben Jenkins, who was struck and killed. The motorist stole the Sergeant’s uniform and fled the scene in Sgt. Jenkins’ patrol vehicle. Following a search that lasted several hours, the suspect, John Dabritz, a 65-year-old White Pine resident, was located and taken into custody with the assistance of multiple agencies.

The words floated through the dark, night air, but Stacia couldn’t make sense of them.

An El Dorado County, Calif., sheriff's deputy was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in the town of Somerset near Placerville. Deputy Brian Ishmael, a four-year veteran of the department, died as a result of the shooting. Two people are in custody.

MINDEN — Due to the recent tragic events in Douglas County, many people may be feeling grief, anxiety, and unsafe. Douglas County is encouraging residents to reach out to support groups in the community to receive help, reassurance and comfort during this difficult time.

In January 2013, 19-year-old Desiree Bragg and her boyfriend were on their way home when Leo Cardoza followed them from the Carson City freeway to her mother’s front door.

What happened next is debated, but the end result cannot be argued: Desiree Bragg, as she attempted to exit her car and get into her mother’s house, was crushed against the garage door by Cardoza’s car, and killed.

While no one can truly know the future, the year 2019 is going to be full of notable anniversaries commemorating events significant to history. Some we celebrate, others we mourn or memorialize. Some are remembered fondly, others with grief.

I'm a bit of a New Year's humbug. I really don't celebrate the holiday. I'm usually "sawing logs" between one year and the next by the time the ball drops on the West Coast.

Two years ago at Christmas time, I made my way across the Capitol Plaza to cover bench dedications in downtown Carson City.

But something caught my eye when I reached the Nevada Slain Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, causing me to pause.

You probably realize that when your child becomes 18 years old, your child is a legal adult in Nevada. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal pointed out it is wise for the 18 year old to have some basic legal documents.

As I write this last column before Christmas, I know I’m supposed to be full of holiday spirit but I’m going to get personal. The last two weeks have been challenging. It’s making me struggle to find the meaning of this season. So I ask for your help despite the fact you may need to break out the tissues.

UPDATE 3:08PM: The following is a statement from Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes regarding the passing of Timothy Jones.
“Our hearts ache for all the families and individuals involved in the car accident in Kings Canyon. We learned yesterday from law enforcement that one of our students passed away. Throughout the day today, the administration at Carson High School has provided and will continue to provide, as needed this week, grief counseling and support for students and staff. As more is learned about a memorial service, we will pass that information along.”

Family members confirmed via social media Sunday that 16-year-old Carson High School student Timothy Jones, one of seven students involved in a Nov. 9 crash on Kings Canyon, has died.

My sister lives in Sutherland Springs. I go there to see her every Thanksgiving. So, when she marked herself safe on Facebook from the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church, my heart dropped into my stomach. I called her and she relayed who she knew who had been shot. Eight people she knew died, five of them from the same family. Five more were injured. My heart rose to my throat.

Today, my usual chipper column seems out of place. Senseless violence in our state, perpetrated at a country music festival in Las Vegas, is horrific. And you know what? It’s just fine to feel the horror of it. It’s just fine to be numb. It’s just fine to cry. It’s just fine to process national or world events exactly the way we need to. Giving each other time, space, and open hearts to express is good medicine. In fact, it’s the medicine we need.

RENO, Nev. — Sarah Hunt never enjoyed the girlie lifestyle. She begrudgingly wore feminine clothes at McQueen High. At Nevada, Hunt played Division 1 softball and soccer where she was more comfortable around campus wearing gender-neutral athletic sweats and sportswear as opposed to dresses and high heels.

Proscenium Players, Inc. is holding open auditions for our next production coming this fall: Nightfall With Edgar Allan Poe by Eric Coble. The play centers around Edgar as he works his way through four of his most famous stories, all while trying to convince the audience that he’s not insane.
