Saddle Up For KIds Event a Success

Food For Thought would like to think all the people who came out and supported us at our Saddle Up For Kids Events. Friday, June 28th’s dinner at the Governor’s Mansion and Saturday, June 29th’s Carnival at Mills Park wouldn’t have been as successful if not for our volunteers!

Car wash Saturday for family of Dayton man who died

There will be a car wash fundraiser Saturday, July 13, for a local Dayton family to raise money to recover the remains of their beloved family member, Steven Larson, who passed away while working out of state.

The car wash begins at 9:30 a.m. at the S & S gas station in Dayton or donations are being taken in an account set up at Greater Nevada Credit Union under Dodey Larson in care of Steve Larson.

Please come out and help this family. The family will also be selling Steve's handmade barnyard woodwork.

Carson City residents receive scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union

Carson City residents Ila Bottoms, Arnold Flores, Leana Garcia, Allison Blair, and Janae Johnston-Bucker are five of 14 students recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship certificate from Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Seventy students throughout northern Nevada applied for the scholarship program, which GNCU has offered for the past 14 years. Bottoms and Flores are attending Western Nevada College; Garcia is attending Great Basin College in Elko; Blair and Johnston-Bucker will be attending the University of Nevada, Reno.

Downtown Business Association spruces Carson City with tree campaign

The Carson City Downtown Business Association was recognized by Carson City Parks and Recreation for its donation of 17 new trees recently planted around town.

Free Shred Day at Greater Nevada Credit Union

Carson City Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Stan Jones is pleased to announce the 2013-14 Board of Directors and Officers.

Re-elected to a second three year term are Curt Spradley, owner, Carson Coffee and Carol Swanson, District Sales for Mary Kay.

Carson High School Students Take a 'Bite Of Reality'

Around 35 Carson City students from Carson High School’s MASH (Mandatory Academic Study Hall) program recently participated in “Bite of Reality”, a hands-on simulation program in which they were given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments.

Greater Nevada Credit Union Accepting Applications for Board of Directors

Greater Nevada Credit Union announced that it has three positions available on the Board of Directors for three-year terms beginning March 19, 2013. Applications for the three positions are being accepted until November 12, 2012.

The Board of Directors sets the strategic course for the credit union and oversees its general activities. Directors serve as volunteers and therefore receive no compensation. However, Greater Nevada does cover the costs of training that its Directors may need in order to be more effective. To qualify for nomination as a Director, a Greater Nevada member must:

Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) will host its annual Carson City Shred Day on Saturday, October 13 from 9 am to noon. The event will take place in the parking lot at the credit union’s Eagle Station branch, located at 451 Eagle Station Lane. Community residents are invited to drop off as much personal paper documentation they would like to safely destroy and recycle. Documents must be removed from binders, though attached staples and paper clips are acceptable.

Carson City Chamber Leadership Institute Class of 2012 graduates

One of the finest classes of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute graduated Thursday. Though a small class, they were mighty and bonded well. Over the course of 2012, they shared many wonderful experiences meeting community leaders and learning about our unique community. Following the graduation ceremony, the official dedication and ribbon cutting of the Carson City Senior Center Leisure Hour Room was held. Mayor Robert Crowell and Senior Center Director Janice McIntosh cut the ribbon as the new graduates looked on.

Greater Nevada Credit Union Awards $15,000 in Scholarships

Fifteen students received $1,000 scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union for the upcoming school year. More than 64 students applied for the program, which the Credit Union has offered to local students for the past 13 years.

Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) held its 63rd Annual Meeting on March 13, 2012 at their headquarters in Carson City. At the meeting 163 individuals were recognized for attaining 35 years of membership with GNCU over the past year. Since GNCU began the recognition program in 2008, more than 500 members have been recognized for achieving that milestone.

During the Annual Meeting, GNCU also announced the new Board of Directors, comprised of the following individuals who volunteer their time and are elected by members to oversee the direction of their credit union:

A dozen Carson High School Students recently learned the importance of building and maintaining good credit. The goal was to provide knowledge that would make them more savvy borrowers.

Four 90-minute classes held January 26 and 27 were taught by Jesse Hartford, Consumer Loan Specialist, and Jackie Tilton, Consumer Loan Processer, both from Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU). Topics included interest rates and accruals and different types of loans.

Carson City free daily news summary for Nov. 8

Greater Nevada Credit Union gained new customers on national Bank Transfer Day on Saturday, a protest against rising fees at large corporate banks. The protest called for people to move their accounts to credit unions and non-profit banks, and also coincides with the growing Occupy Wall Street protests.

GNCU wouldn't release any numbers, but said they had twice the number of people there on a Saturday, and people were definitely moving their money because of dissatisfaction with the big banks.

The Nevada Appeal follows up on the Chobani yogurt factory story we broke last week, saying the reason the factory decided to locate in Twin Falls, Idaho and not Carson City is because we lack cows. According to Rob Hooper, executive director of the Northern Nevada Development Authority, Chobani needs 100,000 cows to supply their milk needs, and there are only 20,000 dairy cows in the entire state of Nevada. Twin Falls also bribed them with $29 million in "incentives."
