CARSON CITY — The completion of the transcontinental railroad in the spring of 1869 changed America forever, dramatically reducing the time and cost for people and goods to move across country and accelerating the western expansion of the industrial revolution.

Well the weekend sure went fast as we say goodbye to March. Now we're heading into Monday, April 1, 2019 where pranks, larks and tom foolery are orders of the day. CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

CHS celebrated its Second Annual Carson Unplugged event this past week where staff and students were encouraged to unplug from technology and be present in the moment, enjoying more face-to-face interactions and less screen time.

We can expect showers this morning with some clearing this afternoon. Speaking of NCAA basketball, the 7th ranked Nevada Wolf Pack Men's basketball team will face 10th ranked Florida Gators today, 3:50 p.m.

Come watch a doubleheader March 30 as your local Carson Victory Rollers battle it out with the Lockeford Liberators and the Carson Junior Victory Rollers take on the Little Rascals. The event takes place at the Carson Community Center gym.

Today is Nevada Moves Day where schoolchildren will be walking and riding their bikes to and from school. Expect mostly sunshine and cloudy skies today as a weather system is expected to move into the region later tonight bringing rain showers to the lower valleys and some snow to the Sierra for the first day of Spring. Here's what is happening around town today, including free admission to the Nevada State Museum.

The next meeting of the Board of Supervisors will be held Thursday, March 21, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the community center located at 851 E. William Street.

Items on the docket include runaway youths, the Ross Gold Park Playground Replacement and ADA Access Project among others.

A new mural has been unveiled in Carson City at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada by artist-in-residence Zet Gold, who is based from Las Vegas. The Nevada Art Council commissioned the mural for the club, which was finished in a week along with a smaller mural on the windows of the teen center.

UPDATE 4:25PM: Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently working on its master plan for Ross Gold Park. Replacement of the aging picnic shelter will be addressed in the master plan.

CARSON CITY — The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will begin demolition on the existing playground and picnic shelter at Ross Gold Park beginning March 25. The playground is over 25 years old and does not meet current playground safety guidelines.

The 28th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Virginia City rocked, rolled and bounced Saturday among the thousands of partygoers who arrived in the famed Comstock town to celebrate a cuisine tradition of the Old West and swill some good ole' fashion Irish cheer.

The Nevada State Museum continues its months-long celebration leading up to the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Carson City U.S. Branch Mint with lectures and other special events in March.

Recognizing March is also Women’s History Month, the museum is presenting the lecture “Women Workers of the Carson City U.S. Mint,” as its March “Mint150” event. The museum’s curator of history, Bob Nylen, will present the lecture at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16.

While technically not Spring until March 20, a week from today, there's a noticeable warmup ahead, with high temperatures near 60 by Sunday.

Zero Fatalities has expanded its partnership with Lyft by teaming up with local businesses and organizations committed to eliminating impaired driving fatalities in Northern Nevada.

Lyft has pledged $50,000 in free ride credit to be distributed during major consumption holidays to support the coalition’s campaigns that promote safe transportation options throughout the region.
